Hello,

Can we eat bitter gourd whilst using Metmorphin ? I am worried about hypo as I understand Bitter Gourd is very good for lowering down the BG(s) ....

For first time in my life - I just tasted Bitter Gourd today and after 2 hours my BG came down to 4.8 :) (Surprised to see this)

I gone through some links below but just want to touchbase with all of you who are very helpful in giving valuable suggestions ....

Please advise.

I didnt think you got hypos with Metformin thats what I have read.

I've read in lots of places that if you're on Metformin you're not supposed to get Hypos. I've only been on it for 6 weeks now but haven't felt any of the symptoms of a Hypo. My BS readings have come down in that time from 27 to the 5-7's range after changing my diet to a low carb one.

OH MY GOURD.........................look what I just bought.

Just need to find out exactly how to cook it and what I can add it to.

I just juice the bitter gourd and have noticed BS falling from reading of 9/10 to just below 6 in two hours.

To reduce the bitter taste, when juicing, I add lime, ginger and celery juice.

Today I added beetroot juice.

Just play around with ingredient for getting the right taste so as not to be put off due to bitter taste.

Bitter gourd is great cooked with lentils in a tomato and coconut sauce ...with lovely indian spices and fresh coriander ...
I just use tumeric and chilli with a little ginger and garlic ....

Also a great laxitive as a vegetable in its own right .... ;)

Yes you can have hypos on metformin .....your diet is important to maintain balance .....
it is a nice meal ....don't dismiss it .....kat x

If we get hypos using bitter gourd then it would be dangerous right ? Do we still consider eating it whilst on meteformin ?

I don't get hypos eating bitter gourd ....

But you can get hypos on metformin ...and for other reasons ....and causes ....

You can always ask you gp to refer you to a dietitien for sound advice ...

Friends,

I have been having one bitter gourd juice (approx 6 inches long) on daily basis. To reduce the bitter taste I also add other vegatable for example beetroot, celery, kale, ginger or lime juice.

From my experience i have never seen the BG level FALL more than 3 mmo/l

I don't have any fear of going into a hypo situation.

If you want to try bitter gourd juice and want eliminate the fear of going into a hypo sutuation then I suggest going with a one half size of bitter gourd. In that case avoid kale & beetroot just add celery, ginger & lime juice.

Hope it helps & Best wishes
