Hi, my name is Andrea and I was diagnosed in July 2014. I was really shocked and thought it was just a matter of changing my diet but no - I am now on Metformin. I have been good and I have managed to lose 4 1/2 stone, put on a few pounds over Christmas but still not had anything sweet since July apart from 1 chocolate at Christmas although admittedly I don't have a sweet tooth. I do get depressed at times and now and then scared of things that may happen. However one of the things I find hardest which may sound silly is that if I go out anywhere its the reaction of people when I say no to cake or something sweet or a dessert. Having dieted all my life I tend to do best when I keep things to myself and I don't really want to keep saying Im diabetic. For example when I went out for my birthday nobody ate dessert because they felt it wasn't fair to me and that really upset me - I don't want to be treated differently, I just want to get on with it really. Anybody out there know what I mean? What excuse can I use, I hate it when people say Oh you are being GOOD!

I just say I don't like sweet things. I don't tell them I'm diabetic or they'll press me to eat cakes etc.

Thank you Daisy. My question is more about the social side of it rather than what diabetes means, I think that's the hardest thing to deal with, peoples reactions. Ive always been quite private regarding health issues for my own problems.

Hi Andiem 1962, welcome to the forum , when this happens to me i ask if there's any mouse or fresh berries and cream...usually ok....fallback ....cheese board.::))

I tell people on a need to know basis - my immediate team at work, people who I stay overnight with etc. I'm wheat intolerant so that gets me out of most cake at work. You could say that you are so stuffed that you couldn't eat another thing. Berries are your friend at dessert time.

I'm sorry but I can't resist - my cats like the odd mouse and cream as well

If it's a three course meal I usually say that I prefer to have a starter and a main and cannot manage a sweet as well or have cheese and biscuits.

Ahhh thanks everyone - cheese or berries seems a great option. I would rather have something than people making silly comments or feeling bad :) I did once have a coffee with cream on top as that seemed a treat.

Im still working on the weight, have a lot to lose still but Im really determined as its not something I am taking lightly

Really appreciate your help xx

I have a decaf coffee with double cream almost every day. If you reduce your carbs you can have a coffee with double cream. It doesn't need to be a treat.
