Hi, i cant stop my morning highs, i take my lanctus before bed (usually 10 units) and normally have a small snack (say a piece of toast). When i wake up my bloods always seem to be around 10 mmol. I usually have a correction dose with breakfast (a few extra units) but 1-2 hours after my breakfast my bloods seem to shoot up to around 14-15 mmol. I dont want to take too much extra insulin incase i go hypo? Any suggestions?
Cheers

Do you know what your bg levels are like during the night, your waking bg levels may be a result of your bedtime snack, on a basal/bolus insulin regime you shouldn't have to snack unless your bg is low.

Ive not had a snack before and this still seems to be the case. Even if it is a result of what i ate before bed, this doesnt explain it shooting up around 1-2 hours after i wake up?

If your waking at 10mmol and your bg goes up to 14mmol an hour after then your bg has gone up by 4mmol, to prevent postprandial spikes many of us administer our insulin 10-20 mins before eating to give our insulin a head start, most QA insulins take 15 mins to work so this helps matters somewhat.

If you want your bg to be lower on waking think about increasing your basal insulin, but much depends on what your bg level are like before you go to bed, if your basal insulin is fine your bg levels shouldn't fluctuate by more than 1.7mmol.

Google the Dawn Phenomenon for an explanation on why bg levels can sometimes be high on a morning.

I agree, but it doesnt seem to happen at other meal times, only in the morning.
Cheers

I get this too. I eat fruit and toast for breakfast. By lunchtime I.m usually back down to 6mmol so I try not to worry about it. It depends how active I am , I tend to rush about doing stuff in the mornings.
