high bg

Hiya, my bg readings are acting up. I am on 4x500mg metformin per day, last hba1c was 49, I do lchf and have lost about 2st and usually my bg is reasonable but sometimes I`ll have a couple of days where I`m high for no apparent reason. Last night at 7.15 I was 7.4, I ate home made tomato soup with a very small slice of wholemeal toast, did some exercise at 8.15 , at 9.15 I was 9.9 and at 10.15 I was 10.4. Does anybody have any idea why this could be? I should add that prior to this I had eaten less than 20g carbs all day.

I'm type 1 so not too sure how the tablets work, but sometimes eating very little and doing exercise and adrenaline can cause liver dump.hence a rise in BSs.

What Nigel says sounds very likely. Exercise spikes me at the time and brings me down later. And tomatoes are pretty high carb. Dr Bernstein regards them as fruit and limits them strictly.

You may never know. But most important, never mind. Let it go and focus on tomorrow's good figures. You sound pretty sorted to me. I'm doing 30g a day as well.

There are a lot of factors that affect my (type 2 diet and exercise) insulin needs/requirements.

Insulin resistence is a biggie (even moderate amounts of exercise can make a huge difference during the next 24 hrs)
then there's stress, and sleep deprivation, and excitement, etc. because the stress hormones play a part.

I do realise that type 1s and LADA function very differently in some ways, but I find it totally reasonable that these factors have an impact on EVERYONE.

Is it worth re calculating carb intake. A small slice of wholemeal bread is 15 grams of carb. 100gms of tomato soup is 7 gms of carb. Just a thought, plus what everyone else has said sounds very likely. Also, I saw this on the Harvard Medical School website:-

When you exercise your muscles need more glucose to supply energy. In response, your liver increases the amount of glucose it releases into your bloodstream. Remember, however, that the glucose needs insulin in order to be used by your muscles. So if you do not have enough insulin available, your blood glucose levels can actually increase right after exercise. Basically, stimulated by the demand from your exercising muscles, your body is pouring glucose into your bloodstream. If you do not have enough insulin available to "unlock the door" to your muscles, the glucose cannot get into your muscles to provide needed energy. The end result is that glucose backs-up in your bloodstream, causing higher blood glucose readings.

Thank you for your replies. Sorry I disappeared yesterday but I went into a bit of a flat spin owing to some really bad bg readings, I have managed to narrow the culprit down to lunchtime 4 crispbreads (total 14g carbs) which gave me a two hour reading of 14.7! A good walk helped to sort it out and I`m now back in the game, sadder but wiser! Before tea, 7.2, at two hours 8 and at bedtime 6.9. Not perfect I know , but a hell of a lot better than 14.7! This morning I was 6.2.

Thank you, bread and jam will never get the opportunity to get tested trust me! I only had the crispbreads because I thought I would be able to tolerate 14g of carbs, turns out I was wrong though!
