How many grams of carbs do you eat each day/meal?

On the subject of counting carbs, I am interested to know exactly how precise people are about it. I am new to carb counting and just got the 'Carbs and Cals' book the other day. I made a meatloaf and I weighed and calculated the carbs in the veg I used but I also used 2 tbsps of tomato purée, 2 tbsps of Worcestershire sauce and 1 tbsp of dried thyme. I calculated the carbs for the Wor Sauce and tom purée but not the dried thyme. I ate one quarter of the meatloaf which had 6g of carbs. Was I being too picky in carb counting the flavourings? It does make baking from scratch slower and harder as I can't just read the nutritional label on the packaging. Your views please!

This is roughly what I eat a day, between 900 and 1200 calories a day, as I want to lose weight. Well lose a lot of weight at the moment I am 100kg and I would like to get to 60kb on day. At the start of this year I was 110kg, so have lost 10kg so far.
Keep smiling

I would of calculated the carbs for the tomatoe puree an Worcestershire sauce but not the time, just as you did.
I know it takes a whole to get used to weighing every thing but you do get used to it.
Weighing things helps me with portion control and getting the right ratio with fat, carbs an protein.
I use an app on my iphone/iPad from mynetdiary to log my BG levels and my food.
Good luck with low carbing

Thanks Fi,
I have always enjoyed cooking and baking but admittedly having to work out the carb content of condiments etc is a pain in the neck. The 'Carbs and Cals' book doesn't have every ingredient - I had to google the tomato puree - but I am keeping a list of every 'new' carb content I find so it will become normal eventually. I am making Chicken Chasseur for dinner so that is going to be a lot of calculating - passata, Tabasco, stock cubes etc! Thanks Fi.

I've never heard reports of LCHF or ketogenic diets causing/worsening depression - on the contrary, the diets seem to be very brain protective. I would urge people to try it for themselves. The story that the brain needs 130g to function is just that - a story. The carbs don't have to be ingested as the body is quite capable of making any it needs by itself. Hence, while there are essential fatty acids and essential amino acids, there is no such beastie as an essential carbohydrate.

My experience with LCHF is that it prevents or much lessens depression. ie smooths out the roller coaster aspect of mood swings.Pity I didnt know this earlier on in life.

That's my experience too, @Pasha. I think diabetics underestimate the effect that wildly swinging BG levels have on mood. I'm much more even-tempered these days than ever before.

Thanks for the reassuring posts Indy and Pasha. I just panicked when I saw what Danny had written about lack of complex carbs making depression worse. Also I have read a lot about the role of nutrition in mental health and there is a strong emphasis on eating whole grains like brown rice and oats because they contain most of the B vitamins which are considered essential for mental health. This may be true but I followed a strict macrobiotic diet for two years when I was younger and in it whole grain rice is considered the 'perfect' food and I ate 3 large bowls of it everyday and not much else. Oh and Miso Soup . All it made me was miserable.

I include absolutely everything (even pepper I add to my food at the table) as I feel there's no point in recording data if it's not accurate :)

Although LCHF seems the best way forward I'm worried that following this approach will cause me to gain even more weight ( I need to lose about 1 1/2 stone)
Does this approach always have a positive effect??

Hi , when I first embarked on the low carb regime , I also needed to lose some weight so I went Low Carb.Medium Fat , the weight came off nice and steadily and now that I`m a reasonable weight , I can afford to up the fats but not the carbs !
