Telling DVLA

I'm type 2 and medication isn't working so I will be starting Insulin next week.

So it's time to let DVLA know about my diabetes.

I went on to their website and downloaded form DIAB1.

I've so far learnt that I need to test my blood a half hour before driving and the every two hours of driving after that.

I've posted the form today so let's wait and see what happens next :?

Best of luck with all this and the DVLA.

I'm not sure..... but I think that the DVLA will want to know what your hypo awareness is like after you have been using insulin for a few weeks (might be more than just a few though) before you get given a 3 year licence. You will most likely need to see either your hospital consultant or your surgery GP or DSN to review you in that time and look at your bg levels and hba1c.
 
Well I got my reply from DVLA today:

I've to send them my licence and they will replace it with a three year one :(

I've to sign a declaration that I accept the decision to give me a three year licence.

I've to always have my blood testing machine with me and test before I drive and every two hours of driving.
If my level is 5.0mmol/l or less I've to take a snack. If it's 4.0mmol/l, or if I feel hypoglycaemic, I've not to drive.

If I have a hypo I've to stop the car, keys out the ignition and move out of the drivers seat. Can't drive until forty-five minutes after blood glucose is back to normal.

I must inform DVLA if I have more than one severe hypoglycaemia within the last twelve months, or whilst driving.

They will send me renewal forms threee months before the three year expiry date.

Thought I'd just share this info for those who are newly on insulin and may wonder what happens with DVLA

can i just ask, when you reapplied for your licence did you fill in a d3 form and also did you have to include id ie. passport and birth certificate? my partner is in the same situaton and im not sure if he has to, he has held a full uk licence for about 5 years, can you advise? xxx :? :)
 
I haven't reapplied yet. I've only told them I have insulin treated diabetes. So they've told me to surrender my licence and it will be replaced with a three year validity. Just had to send them my photo licence and counterpart - no other ID required.

Don't know what a D3 form is and can't find any reference to it on the DVLA site.

Hi, sorry to say, that getting licences when on insulin is not just plain straight forward as suggested.
I am sure you have or will have to fill in a medical form, and lots of questions, and this will be a constant every 3 years.
You are not guaranteed to automatically get your licence renewed.
This will apply for all people that have insulin injections.. Whatever type of diabetes.
Please dont think you are going to get your licence automatically swapped... You may well be a person that does... But a great, great many don't.
 
Normally you will not have to send passports or any id for renewing your licences on medical grounds.
 
For motorbikes and cars you need to fill in a D1 application form and the right questionnaire for your medical condition.
The minute you inform DVLA then somehow you eed to complete a D1 pack, which has everything you need to.

Bus, coach or lorry licence
Fill in a D2 application form and the right questionnaire for your medical condition, and send them to DVLA.

You're confusing me :!: I've only stated the facts of my dealings on this subject from telling DVLA to getting a reply.

The letter I received from DVLA said that medical investigations have been completed and the medical advisor has recommended that my current licence is withdrawn and a new photocard licence will be issued which will be valid for three years.
As I stated earlier I am not applying for a renewal yet. I do expect to have to fill in forms at the end of my three years. DVLA have stated in their letter that they will send me renewal forms three months before the three years expire and my fitness to drive will be looked at again.

The D1 is used to re-apply for a licence if your licence was taken away or surrendered for medical reasons.
You use a DIAB1 to notify DVLA that you are diabetic on insulin.

I am not talking about re-applying in the original post

I did sign the D202 and filled out some other forms so maybe one was a D3 :oops: Sorry I must have missed that :)
 
I completed a DIAB1 form and sent it in. 3yr license issued, permit to drive a 7.5+ tonne truck was revoked, ( haven't driven anything big for years, so no biggie ).

Job Done!

Actually a very intersting point here....

Sorry to have confused issue by the way..

As I understood from OP then...are the licences just simply changed to a 3 year renewable one when first diagnosed needing hypo prone meds? Are you saying that unless you have a 'bigger' licence than a car then it is just a case of it just being swopped over? Did the dvla actually write to your hcp's do you know?

I was really under the illusion that it was not as easy as 1-2-3 (so to speak). That was my impression from what I had seen and heard... (Not just from postings here).
 
Its not always streight forward as replacing your licence with a 3 year one. On a non diabetic related illness I notified DVLA via phone and was sent the appropriate forms, I filled them in, the next thing I heard was I had a letter giving me 3 days notice that my licence was revoked.

They then sent for all my records from the hospital and , to investigate my condition. It took over a year to get my licence back by proving I had been sorted out and was using the correct treatment. I still have to have annual reviews and if I don't pass the review I loose the licence again.

On a diabetic related illness, I again went through the notification process feeling the worst would happen again. I recieved a letter saying to return my licence as it was going to be replaced by a 12 monthly renewable one :(. as part of this review they revoked my entitalment to drive certain catorgories of vehicle.

DVLA sent a remider 9 months later asking me to reapply for my licence, which I did. DVLA then wrote to the hospital and doctors again to see what my condition was, this took a lot longer than the 3 months I had left on my licence and I had to get a letter off them to say I could continue to drive while investigations were on going.

After a good while I had my licence back as a ten year replaceable one, still without the entitlement to drive certain catorgories of vehicle and the licence was endorsed on the plastic part with extra codes. So if I was stopped and I was not complying with the codes I could loose it again.

The anoying factor is for me, is evry year since I go for the checks ups and there is no sign of the condition that caused the restrictions to be put in place. Due to reporting them and as at the time I was supposed to have had the condition, I can't get the catorgories added back on to my licence and the codes lifted.

Thought i'd help out with the issues of re-applying for licences.

I've had a licence for 8 years. The first time round getting out went very smoothly as Jim has shared his experience, I did all the medicaly questionnaires etc and they issued me with a 3 year restricted licence.

About 3 months before the 3 years is up they write to me with the renewal forms including medical questionnaires, which I then send back and within approx 6 weeks they issued me with a new 3 year restricted licence.

This year however, things took longer, they wrote to my GP and my specialist consultant for more information on how I was managing etc (this is again a tick box questionnaire that they fill in)

I was thankfully reissued with a new 3 year restricted licence last Friday (thank god)

I believe under the new driving laws that came into effect last October 2012 they are monitoring diabetics a little more and are being stricter :shock: I have one or two friends that have had their licences revoked due to hypo unawareness and or increased issues with there control. I believe as long as you a relatively under control and you still have your hypo awareness there shouldn't (theoretically) be a problem. However, they do always throw a spanner in the works.

Is the D202 FORM THE declaration form? I'm slightly confused with the dvla at the minute I received a letter from them saying that they was issuing a 3 year license I had to sign the declaration form and send back with my license in it which I have done but that has been lost in the post so I now have to wait for the declaration form to be posted put to me again :( I tried ringing the dvla as I wanted to know something but couldn't get through so was too busy so I e mailed them asking them to confirm that when they have received my declaration form will that be everything they will be needing g and my 3 year license will be sent to me there reply was that that they are just waiting for the form to be received which will then be passed o to the appropriate team to see if they require anything further or if my license can be sent off this has left my confused as I'm thinking why would more checks need to be carried and why write to me saying that a 3 year license is going to be issued if they might need to carry out more checks? This is the first time I have informed dvla so I'm not reapplying x
 
@frith1988 Yes D202 was the declaration form.

It's unlikely for more checks to be done. Probably just say that to protect themselves.

If your licence and form have been lost in the post the I do suggest you ring them and discuss it. I know it can take a while to get through to them but I believe they are quite helpful when you do speak to them.

They are sending me another form through the post as when I originally rang them it was to check to see if they had received it through the post and they hadn't so they are sending me another and I just have to say that I've already sent mine off but it has been lost in the post. Thank you for your reply I was just confused as I thought why do they need more medical info when I have signed the declaration form lol got all my hopes thinking I was okay and then that lol

How long did it take for you to receive your license through the post when you sent off your d202 form?
