I want to thank the people who post on this forum. I was diagnosed Type 2 in February 2015 with 18 from a blood test and then an HbA1c of 95. I was given a sheet about diabetes, the first suggestion was diet, weight loss and exercise. I asked if I could try this and was told "impossible". I was prescribed Metformin. Fortunately (with hindsight) I reacted violently to Metformin and was taken off it, but was told I would need to go back on it or last resort Insulin. I was given a meter and test strips which I read a lot of people don't get. I did a lot of research on the internet and found this site. I read a lot about the Newcastle Study and really wanted to give that a try. My BMI was 24.9 so just into the normal range. My doctor didn't seem to heard of the Newcastle Study and the nurse thought the diabetes was due to my age(66) as my diet wasn't that bad. I decided I was going to try diet, weight loss and exercise. My doctor eventually agreed to a 3 month trial. I tried to lower my calories trying for a 500 deficit. As from my weight at that time I only needed about 1400 calories a day that would mean only eating about 900 unless I exercised. I had originally gone to the doctor as my foot had gone weird and walking had become a real problem. Foot was cramping up and then the leg. I gradually tried to walk a little more although quite slowly. I started looking at this forum and realized I was reacting to all the carbohydrates. Weetabix which the nurse said was good spiked my blood sugars. Also brown rice and wholemeal pasta. Fruit was also a problem so I changed my diet and my blood sugars eventually started to improve. I've lost about one and a half stone. I managed to increase my walking to a couple of miles or more most days. Still very slow as the foot problem is still there. My HbA1c is now 50 so I feel I'm going in the right direction although I want it a lot lower. Nurse thinks my fasting levels are too low. In the 5's mostly. I want them lower.
Diet - I'm averaging about 50 carbs a day which seems to be working for me, though I keep testing and now trying to add different foods. Not the low fat high carbs diet I was told to do.
Weight loss - my problem wasn't so much my weight as my waist, central obesity. I'm still working on this though it's now almost within normal.
Exercise - still just walking but trying to keep going at this.
So thank you for all the posts that I have read and acted upon I think I'm going in the right direction. I a still learning lots.
