Hi guys, I'm not sure if this has been covered already, but I'm thinking about getting my first tattoo and wondered whether I'll have to have a note from my GP to take along to show I have good enough control of my BG before I have it done?

Will be grateful of any advice, thanks!

Hi Vick. I had my first tattoo done last week. I didn't take any letters or anything from my GP, I didn't even tell the tattooist I was diabetic. My BGs are in control and were still good after. I've had no pain or soreness and its now fully healed a week after having it done. I'd recommend buying a nappy rash cream called bepanthen, it's very good and helps with the healing. Good luck Nicola

All you need to do is 'forget' to mention you are diabetic. Check your levels before and after but you should be fine.

I have over 30 tattoos and my tattooist stilll doesnt know I am diabetic, oops lol.

Had 3 done since diagnosis.

Just keep a closer eye on your sugars afterwards and follow the standard after care advice.

Great, thanks everyone. Was a little worried about the healing of it NicolaB70! Will definitely look at getting some of that cream!

You won't need much of it when applying, my tattoo is only small so only needed a dab morning and night. My husband and son also used it on their recent tattoos and their tats were a lot bigger then mine but theirs healed within a week or so. It's a greasy cream that forms a barrier but does work well with healing and also stops the skin from drying out.

Never had a problem with tattoos and I have loads! The cream that vick22 told you to get is very good well worth getting top advice.

Booked in for a week on Friday to get it done! Excited!

I already have an idea for another one, but daren't tell the husband...!

Lol that's not what he says! Haha

Do what I used to do, get them done and then tell him lol.

My hubby went to USA for 4 weeks, I said I wanted a new tatt while he was away, by the time he got back, I had 3 more as well.

Haha sneaky mammamia2006, I like it

Had my tattoo done today! BG levels were spot on all the way through, but currently have a 17.9! do levels usually come down later that day or did you guys find it was the following day etc?

What did you have done and how did you find it?

I've had a profile of Mickey Mouse's head put on my inner wrist. I'll post a pic when I've taken off the cling film! Lol it was pretty painless really, I'd say inserting a cannula over bone hurts a hell of a lot more! Lol

That sounds great. My son had a small storm troopers (Star Wars) head on his inner wrist and he said that was painful compared to the others he has had done. We found though that the sooner we took off the cling film and washed tattoo, it didn't sting as much through sweating in the cling film. Mine has healed lovely and I had no problems what so ever with it healing.

Aww I love Star Wars, I bet that looks good! I've been told to keep the cling film on for a few hours and use that cream you told me about too (which I'd forgotten to get beforehand) and to apply it 4-5 times a day. What is your tattoo of?
