Does anyone else get ketones premenstral? I'm type 1 and on a pump. I recently stopped taking my contraceptive pill and am now getting low levels of ketones in the lead up to my period, my blood sugars are not high. Is this normal? It's making me feel awful.

Hi,

When you say 'low levels' what do you mean?

Excellent.

Definitely nothing to worry about!
We low carbing type 2s actually try for higher ketones (1.0 to 4.0) as a sign we are correctly low carbing and in nutritional ketosis.
- and we feel great. Energy, stamina and concentration are, for me, far better than when my ketones are very low.

I completely understand that type 1s risk ketoacidosis, but that comes with much higher blood glucose AND higher ketones.

I suspect that your feeling awful is more to do with monthly hormone stuff than the ketones.

However, hopefully some T1s will be along to give their point of view :)
