Fasting Blood Glucose Test

Hi everyone. I am a long term type 2 diabetic and had my usual fasting blood test today. My surgery said to starve for 12 hours but due to 'administration issues' all patients were extremely late being seen and I ended up fasting for 13 and a half hours. Will this give me an abnormally low reading? By the end of the test I had begun to feel a bit strange (light=headed) and was told I looked pale. After eating a chocolate bar I was told my colour was improving. Any thoughts? I now have a raging headache. Take care. Patricksmate

Is it safe to assume that you don't check your own blood sugars? Were you drinking water during that period, any chance you could have been dehydrated?

Hi Urbanracer - thanks for getting back to me and welcoming me to the site. I guess I was getting dehydrated as they had trouble getting blood from me which is very unusual. I would normally have checked my glucose levels straight after but as I was so desperate to get something to eat quickly I left the surgery as soon as I had had my test done. I did drink water before I went but nothing since 9am and I was eventually called at 11.20. Again, thank you for your welcome and advice. Patricksmate
 
Hi and welcome,

Is this an HbA1c test you are talking about? If so, fasting will make no difference as it is a sort of average of the previous 2 to 3 months, so what happens in the few hours before is irrelevant. We don't normally need to fast for an HbA1c, but if you were also having cholesterol checked, then fasting is advisable.

I agree your "funny turn" and headache was possibly dehydration.
