Hello All,
My 16 year old collie dog Moss has type 1 and I've run out of Caninsulin and wont be able to buy any until Tuesday. Is it possible to use human insulin. I'm able to get NovoRapid insulin aspart. Can anyone advise. I need to do something as her next injection is due tomorrow morning.

Regards,

Acceptance of health treatment claims that are not adequately supported by evidence. I dislike it when people sell ineffective and even harmful alternative health products to exploit the desperation of people with chronic illness.

I suggest you call her vet for advice on this. Vets usually have an after hours service.

I cared for my diabetic cat for 2 years before she passed away, so I know what it's like to have a diabetic pet. She was on Lantus.

Thanks for the advice CatLadyNZ. I owe Moss a huge dept of gratitude as she helped me when my wife died 2 years ago. Moss has a brilliant sense of humour and even although she's blind she can send you to Coventry and turn her back on you.

If you are in the UK then all vets have some kind of emergency arrangements. Phone the surgery and either they will have a duty vet or there will be a message with a number to call. Otherwise, if you have a local Pets at Home? Many of them have vets that are open on Sundays. Good luck and take care of that babee. X

Quick answer is no.. Caninsulin is U40 strength. Where as Novorapid is U100 concentrate.
If you are using U100 insulin in a U40 syringe or pen? You will overdose your dog..
Novorapid also has a profile that only works for around 4 hours tops, from the point of injection. Suitable for bolusing for meals.

I had a boss with a T1 Jack Russel many years ago..
Speak to a vet!

Interesting. Many years ago the people next door but one to me had this weird white cat with massive fluffy feet.
It used to stroll into my house & do this silent mew..?
On one occaision I opened the fridge & it expressed an interest in the contents. I thought "oh yeah, meat."
But it seemed more interested in my Novopen when I pulled it out to bolus. I happen to keep the pen with the Lantus pen in the top of the fridge door.. It looked up watching me while I injected.. Silent mewing like a suffocating fish. Then would go back outside on its "patrol."

My wife mentioned the cat to the neighbours & was told it was Diabetic & not to feed it because of a "special diet."

Yeah, my cat seemed to welcome getting her insulin shot. She would come into the kitchen at around the usual time and just wait for it. She never complained while getting the injection either.

The silent mew is a time honoured method of getting humans to do what they want us to do for them.

I'm fully aware of the manipulative nature of cats... ;)
