Yesterday while having a read of the forums trying to get to grip with insulin doses I stumbled across a post about cals and carbs. A book or app that helps you carb count. I downloaded the app on my phone and for the first day in 5 weeks by blood sugars have been normal all day! 6.8, 5.8 and 5.3 pre tea.

I feel like I've been set free, like a huge weight has been lifted. I know it is only day 1....... But today was a good day!

I'd like to thank everyone for their posts, comments and sharing being newly diagnosed this forum has been a lifeline X X

I missread your post I thought you were talking about cats and carbs. sorrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrry

That's quite funny @martsnow :)

@debsugs, Carbs & Cals is a great visual guide to carb counting, there's also another app called Cook & Count which by all accounts is very good.

The problem I find with carbs and cals (whilst the pictures are very useful) is that it's not quite as accurate as finding the carb valuue of something and then doing the maths yourself, for example I'm having baked beans for lunch, the can says that;s 25g carbs (on the 200g can) carbs and cals says it's 31 grams of carbs... Not a massive difference I know but if you're on a high ish ratio it could be the difference of a unit of quick acting (which for me could mean going high / low... mind you that could just be me!

Not used carbs and cals, but MyFitnessPal is really good. It's got a huge database of branded and non-branded items. It's even got a barcode scanner so that you can scan the items you've bought from a shop and it will total up the nutrition.

They'll always be a variation in carbs with foods like baked beans, much will depend on how much sugar is added to the tomato sauce in each brand, books like Carbs & Cals only ever give an average unless you purchase a book like the Calorie Carb & Fat Bible which does list most popular brands.

Well nearly the end of day 2 and am just as excited! My bm has been 5. Something all day, it's AMAZING. I like the sound of the barcode scanner but this seems to be working for me at the mo!

Great to read debsugs! I've been recommended that today & downloaded the app. It looks very good :)
