Hello friends,

I haven't been here for a while, I've had other stuff on my mind, as I'm sure you'll appreciate.

As far as I'm concerned, all my GP worries about is my type 2 diabetes. She certainly worries about it, a lot more than I personally do, for this past year, i couldn't give 2 hoots about it! I can say that because my diabetic nurse has been telling me for 3 years, that my control is good. NOT very good, but ok. :D My GP for this past year has been advising me not to check my blood too often; saving NHS money blah, blah and blah. How can I save NHS money, when I also have had heart disease for 2 years, and since July, been diagnosed with prostate cancer? I didn't ask for all this!

So imagine my surprise when I checked my blood the other day, before lunch and 4 hours after breakfast, with no snacks in between - my result was 11.3!! I was quite shocked, and as far as I'm concerned, this must be the cancer effect. Also my GP would be pleased, as I had not checked my blood for 2 months! Yet I feel ok in myself, no problems to report.

A week next Tuesday, I go to Singleton at Swansea, for a CT scan, prior to getting my appointments for radiotherapy, which I'm guessing will be February. Also a week before my CT scan, that is next Monday coming, I need to start a week long low fibre diet. This of course will continue while I'm having radiotherapy treatment. Someone told me that won't suit my diabetes. Yeah? So what am I supposed to do? I'm afraid in this case, the oncologist takes priority over my GP. I'll do as I'm told, and deal with any consequences, later.

My thoughts are with you at this time, I have only been diagnosed type 2 for six weeks.

Six years ago I was diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer, and had to have an emergency prstectomy.

I have been in remission for six years.

At the end of the day it is your body and it is up to you whose guidance you want to listen to. The oncologist can suggest a course of treatment for you but your G.P. Is the person who has to agree to the treatment, and prescribe as necessary

At this moment in time your health and wellbeing with regard to the prostate cancer should take priority. If you do have to undergo a diet change whilst having the radiotherapy then this will only be short term whilst having the radiotherapy, and you can return to your "normal" diet once the course of radiotherapy has been completed.

Your G.P. will already be aware of dietary requirements during radiotherapy so I do not feel this should be of great concern.

I am sorry if this does not appear to be of great help to you.

I wish you good luck with the radiotherapy and that this will lead to a remission in your cancer

Take good care of yourself, and remember you are not alone in your suffering, everyone who is part of this forum, is here for you as well

Regards

Hello Martin,

thank you for your reply. I'm sorry to hear about your recent type 2 diagnosis. It probably hit you like a bolt from the blue. I would advise asking your doctor to refer you to a dietician, who I'm sure would help you to follow a healthy eating plan, suitable for diabetes.

Also congratulations on your remission, and long may it continue!

As I've been diabetic for about 12 years now, I won't be too concerned about the low fibre diet I shall be starting tomorrow. At the end of the day, it's for my own benefit, and if it helps me to deal with the radiotherapy treatment, without any complications, I shall be happy.

Once I've recovered from my RT therapy, I shall be applying for a 6 week diabetic diet course, by the Expert Patient organisation, just as a reminder as to how I ought to be eating the foods, for my condition. Several years ago I attended a course by this organisation, as I was recommended by my GP to attend. It was a course for patients with long term conditions. I found it extremely helpful.

Hi Frank

Thanks for the reply. I found out about my Prostate Cancer by accident.

I went to the Drs because I had the same symptoms as my dad who has just been diagnosed with prostate cancer.
The Doctor told me I was imagining the symptoms due to my long history of mental health issues
I had to fight with him to have tests and it is only by getting the results I actually got an apology from my GP

I also found out by accident That I had Type 2.

Being the kind soul that I am, I bought my Sister in law a BG meter as she had just been diagnosed as a type 2). She told be to do a reading, on my self, to "prove" what a "normal" BG should be
To prove to her I was healthy, I did a test, and it came back as 20+

I went to the Drs telling him of my fears, he said "who has been diagnosed this time"
After fighting again to be sent for tests it turns out I have been type 2 for twelve months

In future I think I will have to continue to self diagnose first.................

Good luck once again Frank with your radiotherapy and I wish you have a successful outcome

Regards

Mart
