Type 1 - Is it genetic?

My 4 year old is type 1. Great granny had 2 siblings with type 1 one who died as a child. Coming down the family tree there are T1 s all over the place. But because no parents and children in the same family have it we were told there wasn't a genetic link but with so many how can there not be...

My 4 year old son has just had his lowest HbA1c since diagnosis (55 or 7.2) and its all due to the pump. It makes it all worth while knowing that! Annette

Just thought I'd share my son's HbA1c test results, drum roll please... 55 or 7.2! Lowest since diagnosis. I'm just so pleased that the pump is working out so well. Annette

    magic wand needed

Hi I kept meaning to update this but time just keeps running away from me! What worked in the end was a trip to the children's hospital in Aberdeen (emergency ferry followed by air ambulance) and being on a drip for 2 days. He was admitted with a blood sugar level of 2.1 and a ketone level...

    magic wand needed

My son has had a stomach bug since Thursday. Sickness and diahorea. We spent Thrusday night in hospital as his blood sugar was on the floor and he couldn't keep anything down. We thought he was a bit better today but no sick again. So its after midnight and I'm sitting up feeding him apple...

Problems at school - Urgent advice needed please

You are certainly not over reacting. It sounds like more education is needed to drum in the seriousness of the situation. Can your DSN go in and help sort things out? I'm in the lucky situation that my son's nursery has a most excellent nursery nurse who copes well and follows instructions to...

    type 1 and snacks

Hi I'm the parent of a 3 year old diabetic on a pump. I'd like to comment on one or two things in your original post. Her HbA1c is good for a child and well within the right range and her parents should be congratulated for having it at this level. Therefore her blood sugar can't be all that...

Pump and insulin in today !!

The first day my son was on the pump we had a hypo in the afternoon and had some trouble keeping his blood sugar up in the evening. We were told the levemir in his system would have been the cause.

Why don't pumps come with pre-filled cartridges?!!

I asked the Animas rep exactly this when we were fiddling about trying to fill our first catridge. Apparently its not cost effective as there are too few people on pumps.

Least painful smallest lancet + meter for 4 year old???

We use a Accu-chek multiclix with my 3 year old. You can adjust how deep the lancet goes in very easily. If it doesn't go in far enough it can be tricky to get enough blood without squeezing so its important to have the setting right so you only have to prick once.

    omnipod insulin therpy pump? any1

You can with our Animas 2020! Its brilliant as there is no working out how much insulin to give the pump just does it for you. It does the same if you need to correct a high blood sugar - you just tell the pump what the reading is and it then works out the insulin. Simples!

how old was you/r child wen they went onto a pump?

Hi My son Erland is 3 (June birthday) and has been on a pump for 6 weeks. He was diagnosed at 20 months. Now we've got the night time levels sorted (twice nightly checking was tough going) the pump is excellent. It's given us so much more flexibility and much steadier blood sugar levels...

    How do you do yours?

I find it so funny/strange/unsettling that no-one is told the same thing. Surely we should all have the same information and training should be the same for everyone? We were told to always change the reservoir at the same time as the set because the insulin starts to react to the bottle after...

    How do you do yours?

Hi My son also has a Animas 2020 and uses Inset 11. We change his set before dinner at 6pm. We leave in the old set and take it off when he has his bath later on. If the set isn't working at all your blood sugar would soar after your meal (high teens and 20s) as no insulin would be getting...

    offset time???

Sorry, I don't know. We've got an Animas pump and whatever 'offset' time is it must be something else on an Animas! Could the carb/insulin ratio be wrong for morning snack? We have different carb ratio for breakfast, lunch & supper but we've had to fiddle about to get them right. probably...
