    Long working short-acting insulin

Do you know why they recommend jelly babies. In the 80s they researched which sweets could be used by T1 children for hypo treatment. They didn't recommend more than one. And thats 40 years ago - there are better foods available now - ho hum..

    Insulin to carb ratio

Its a game changer - the leap forward is not simple (more tech to learn) but the improvement in quality of life is amazing (and they are not difficult to get along with - I actually found them less intrusive than injecting in public etc) Worth considering as the benefits are huge if you put the...

When I was a lad it was a long while ago

When I was diagnosed (1973) my mum and dad asked the nurses "If he can't have sweets, what can we give him?" Answer was "cheese" About 20 years of newly diagnosed T1s were told that in the 70s and 80s - that made a heck of a lot of diabetic cheese addicts - for those of us 'of a certain age'...

    Diabetes has ruined my life

I'm the same as you - so many promises of a cure (in the press etc) over the years and nothing turned up 'yet' - there is some promising research but I'm not holding my breath - just use the tech I have to the best I can and make it as safe as possible. Love where I am now - hopefully 'better'...

    Diabetes has ruined my life

Been in the club 52+ years now. Got very scared a few times, and thought - stuff this, I'm on my own looking after it, I may as well see what I can do (otherwise its gonna finish me) Went on a pump - better but no where near fixed. Self funded CGM - better, but needed alarms when I slept. Got...

Yes...and my first job was with a brewery - don't know if those events were connected though

When I was a lad it was a long while ago

I remember Marstons 'Low C' - I think they advertised it as a low carb beer (carbs turned to alcohol). My dad used to buy this for me in the local pub when I was a teenager. On a Wednesday my mum worked - so we went to the local pub (near where my dad worked) and played pool - had a 2 low C's...

Type 1 diabetes. I'm researching Omnipod 5 in the UK, pump vs. pens/MDI (pros and cons)

Bare with it - when it works its life changing (but can be frustrating to set up initially). Other bits that worked for me (with the Omni-Dash as not using the pods any more) were the 'flappy bits' on my sides on round my back. Was surprisingly out the way and was comfortable. Using Dexcom 1+...

    Insulin Sensitivity

Hi @Tony337 - I think over the years I've accepted its whatever works for each of us. There are lots of ways of achieving the same thing (different numbers here and there of carbs, exercise and insulin) but if thats a consistent and working pattern for you and your life - thats the best way of...

    Insulin to carb ratio

I think the one generally used is 3.9-7.8 for TTIR (don't know whether thats an medically accepted range but have seen it used in medical questionaries from NHS and drug companies.

    Insulin to carb ratio

Its all possible but it take a lot of time and study to do. I started as I'd wanted alarms on my watch from the Libre 2 and started looking at how I could do that. Eventually I thought, well if I can do this, why can't I tie up the CGM and the pump and automate it (4 years before the current...

    Insulin to carb ratio

Its a heck of a lot to try and take on - took me years (literally) to work it all out (and a lot of getting it wrong - still learing). For a pump, you dribble in background (Basal) using your foreground insulin at a rate you decide (I like to split it into 24 hours and adjust each hour). Thats...

    Insulin Sensitivity

Isn't that calc just a starting position - we then need to change it (possibly wildly) due to actual body chemistry etc? I'd get 1800/49.5 = 36 (or 2.0) - my actual is 1.5 but as I'm using Dynamic ISF - its up and down like a <phrase deleted for sensitive readers> throughout the day (currently...

    Insulin to carb ratio

Its DIY and not off the shelf (it will be heading to commercial systems but no idea how long that will take). Nothing is perfect - but makes life easier - I don't count carbs, just eat and it sorts out the food hitting my BG....but large amounts of carbs will send you above 10mmol (as the CGM...
