I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes on 6th August 1954, 3 days after my 6th birthday.
I was balanced on a healthy diet, which while in hospital included everything that all other children ate including cake and biscuits, and BOVINE LENTE INSULIN As a 6 year old child I was not denied anything that a normal 6 year old would eat but discouraged from eating cakes and sweets in excess.
Once I returned home life carried on as before and living in the middle of the Countryside and being involved with horses and ponies from birth I had a very active childhood with much horse riding and equestrian sports and the freedom of the countryside to lay in.
I have 3 daughters, delivered normally, non of which have diabetes. I have 5 Grandchildren again Diabetes free.
I have been very lucky so far and have No diabetic related problems and continue to lead an active, mainly outdoor life.
