Type 1 Parents Don’t Seem To Understand

Dear "Dodo", I thought this was me writing a response. My Mum, Dad and Sister nick-named me Dodo from when my big sis could speak (year older than me, now 54). My Mum's response kicked me in teeth 4 yrs ago when I was diagnosed T2, insulin dependant by commenting "Oh! This has never happened...

    Type 1 Sharp box

In my home town (in Scotland) sharps boxes can be obtained on request (free) from GP or certain chemists that GP suggests. Return full boxes back to GP only, and replacements given again, on request free

What question would annoy you the most?

I asked a work colleague if I could sit down for couple of minutes/needed Jelly Babies - hypo hitting (they aware I diabetic) - asked if I wanted a glass of water!

So it's been two and a half years

Reading all responses is so positive and close to home for us all in the same predicament, and I hope the comments made, or even mirroring the same individual feelings, helps - has done wonders for me and I'm so grateful to read and wish you all very best in getting shot of the same worries that...

How not to fart on low carb ???

I've found Sprouts and green veg do same for me, but for the added aromatic (NON-PLEASANT) my daily intake of Creon Tablets give it that "piggy" stonk (mostly and thankfully hen in bed), even my cat yowls in terror!

    Health Anxiety

Fully understand where you're coming from, the harder you try and achieve lower blood sugar levels, the better you think you'll feel in control, but the down side is anxiety kicking in. You worry if your glucose levels go too low, that something bad could happen and (myself) neurotic stuff...

Blood Levels - when to have a snack before bed

When you say "before going to bed" - please can you tell me approx. time you go to bed, how many hours sleep you get, and when you get up for next finger-jab check in morning? I also worry about hours between last meal, sleep & unknown hypos through night if I don't get up later and nibble on...

First thoughts when diagnosed? (Type 1)

Diagnosed T2 originally 3 years ago aged 49. but insulin dependant and treated T1. Scary, read loads of stuff, fell into routine and acceptance and pretty damned good BG control. HOWEVER, feel I'm turning a bit of an OCD person with clocks, timing of tasks and what has to be done at certain...

    breakfast

Bran Flakes and blueberries, sprinkled with cinnamon and almond milk are a cereal I enjoy as insulin dependant 4 yrs, but also need the exercise regime (i.e. "hard labour" working 4 hours as cleaner, walking to and from work etc). HumulinM3 injections pre-breakfast of 10 units, and same again...

    Hot!

Understand completely. Done the Menopause very early (43yrs old) and now 53yrs old. Mine is Diabetes hypo warning nowadays due to stress/worry situations

    Meter Readings

I do my first-thing testing, after I do the peeing, feed cat, black coffee/cigarette and sit inactive catching up on missed TV soaps from night before. I understood that liver dumping may be good to ease fatty-gathering in liver, but still a bit of a novice in this area. My normal readings are...

I had my first hypo ever

Excellent advice on having hypo treatments everywhere. My Jelly babies (and glucose tablets) are in every room of the house (and in jacket pocket/handbag). My hypo shakes come on when I'm hitting approx. 2.7 or less (usually 4hr intervals of finish eating and doing labouring job), and then...

    Alcohol in Moderation

Yes, we are all different, but you 'n' me sound quite alike when it comes to red wine deal - blood sugars stable, don't drink after couple lunch-time ones, although weekends can be a bottle sometimes

    How were you told?

I was in Hospital 50 miles from my home, getting gall-bladder removed and complicated operation to open ducts liver/pancreas. On waking I was informed bluntly that it had been ascertained I was diabetic - post operation, not PRE-operation. Before the procedure I was continually asked if I was...

    low carb diet in hospital

Totally agree, menu for diabetics is dire, particularly bad for newly diagnosed rookie diabetics who have no knowledge of controlling carb intake/insulin ratio, nutrition, etc. I was diagnosed during stay for gall-bladder removal/pancreatic disorder, hospital refusal to discharge due to high...
