    sugar surfing by Stephen Ponder

Following Dr Stephen Ponder 'teaching' sugar surfing techniques on his Facebook page for a couple of years (before he wrote the book) transformed my approach to managing type 1 and taught me SO much (and I've had T1 for 51 yrs). He is a wise, extremely sensible, non judgemental and supportive...

How old were you when you first diagnosed with type 1?? And how long do you have it??

My consultant says there are ONLY 2 things you can't do with type 1: be an astronaut or a fighter pilot! Are you either of those? If not, ignore the Dr and go for it - you can do whatever you set your mind on so long as you take care of yourself.

How old were you when you first diagnosed with type 1?? And how long do you have it??

Diagnosed at 13 in 1965, so now in my 51st year of T1. All going pretty well these days, tho it wasn't always like that! Here's my reflections on the first 50 years. I really enjoy advocating for others now and do lots for the diabetes charities, for research and for the NHS. Really...

Apply to go on the Animas Sports Weekend and it will change your life! You have to pay around £130 I think, but it's worth every penny and more. Reflections on 50yrs with Type1

I hope this blog will give hope and perhaps some suggestions to people who are coming to terms with living with T1. I've had my struggles but am totally at peace with diabetes and believe that we can all be at peace with it if we face up to and deal with our fear and anger. Have a read...

40 days of CGM, setup and thoughts

Totally agree re best innovation for decades! I've had T1 50yrs and since buying it 2yrs ago I also have best A1c in my life (tho higher than yours - the alarms drive me bonkers and I'm hypo unaware). Also agree that CGM is only for those confident enough to experiment for many months to get...

    Palmer Insulin Injector wanted

Did you ever get hold of one Colin? I've love one for 'old time's sake'!! I had one in the 60s and although it really hurt, I liked having some 'cool kit' as a teen - a bit like many now crave pumps and CGM as being the thing to have regardless of their ability to utilise the info and help...

    50 UP, 50 TO GO.

I think Diabetes UK or JDRF should hold an annual shin dig for everyone who reaches 50 yrs of T1 every year! Would be great to exchange notes, laugh at the good and bad times and have some recognition for our 50 years of time (like porridge or hard labour sometimes!). God I think that's a...

Congratulations!! Have you got your 50yr medal yet?! Am due for mine next autumn (need to ask to see gp's record to get exact date so I can celebrate!). type 1 need to sort myself out :(

Register with a GP, ask for a hospital referral (maybe to a different hospital to the one that didn't give you support before), insist on a referral to attend the DAFNE course to learn about how to look after yourself (see their web site for details), and most importantly, phone the Diabetics...
