    What sort of strict diet are you following? Get yourself a carb counting book and try avoiding bread, potatoes, pasta, rice, cereals etc. Low carbing will really help to reduce your blood glucose numbers - sorry can't advise on medication

    Cliff - what do you do to counteract the dawn phenomenem? Do you take a snack if your blood sugars are below a certain level?

    If you can sensibly control your blood sugar with diet andexercise, why would you want to start meds with their side effects?

    Have had a 5.9 today!!! That is our lowest reading to date during the last 3.5 weeks. Still not happy with the fasting results first thing which tend to be around 8 - 8.5. Feel like I am constantly nagging with reminder to OH that he needs a little snack before bed to counteract the dawn...

    No worries. It might also be useful if you keep a food diary alongside these readings so that you are able to ascertain what foods cause a spike and which foods are benign, if you know what I mean.

    Try testing on waking up - a fasting test and two hours after each meal - these will give you useful/useable test results.

    He has not started to take the Metformin as yet - he wanted to try and see what he could do with low carbing. He wants to try and avoid meds if he can.

    Thanks Catherine, that is certainly interesting reading! It would seem to make sense and might explain why he is not getting readings lower than 7 so far with low carbing. Although perhaps I am being too ambitious this early on with the low carbing - how long does it take for it low carbing...
