    Lower-carb Quick, Easy, Breakfast Options

Hi, I'm vegan type 1, and for years my breakfast has been cereal (about 70g of whatever cereal I like) with soya milk. It's quick, easy, and keeps me full for a few hours. However, I'm trying to slowly reduce my carb intake, and am looking for suggestions for alternatives. They don't need to...

    FREESTYLE LIBRE ON SALE!!!!

So what's in the starter pack that you can't get just by buying the reader and a sensor?

    New insulin Lilly Peglispro

Ok - another idea for you: Set a phone reminder to inject. You clear it when you inject, so if it's sitting in your notifications you know you've not injected yet. I check my phone often enough I've never gone more than 1 hour past without noticing...

    FREESTYLE LIBRE ON SALE!!!!

I notice that the freestyle libre starter pack is out of stock. Is there any reason I can't just buy the meter and some sensors? I'd like to try this product, it seems so good.

    New insulin Lilly Peglispro

I've noticed that my Solostar Lantus pen lid attaches one of two ways round: Either with the clip pointing to the main label, or the clip pointing to the "back" of the label. I inject Lantus twice a day - so I make sure that it's pointing to the label after the morning injection, and the back...

    FREESTYLE LIBRE ON SALE!!!!

Can the scanner be re-purposed for a second user? It seems a waste to dispose of that part if it can.

Calling all Vegan, Vegetarian and Strict Vegetarian Diabetics

I'm type 1 (since 1996) and vegan (since 1998). I don't follow a low-carb diet, just tend to eat what I like (within reason) and balance the insulin accordingly. My health is very good on it, low cholesterol, etc, although my hbA1c could be lower. My local diabetes nurse reckons it's better...

    How many carbs?

I tend to eat 120-240 a day, depending on what I have. Occasionally quite a bit more. In general if you're trying to lose weight, you should avoid eating foods which are high in fat AND carbs.

Must I take insulin with every meal?

I'd take dietary advice on this board with a pinch of salt - what's bad for one person may not be bad for you, etc. Personally, I find a (single) weetabix before bed doesn't have much effect. The main thing you can do is experiment and see what works for you. If you want to stick to fruits and...

    Airplanes

I always carry insulin etc in hand luggage, and rarely even bother mentioning it beyond the check in desk. A couple of times security has queried what it was on the scanner, but it's never been an issue. I don't carry a doctor's letter - I've got an "Insulin user's ID card" from Diabetes UK...

Are you hitting the 3 main diabetes targets?

2 for me. I'm type 1, vegan and relatively fit, so I've never exceeded those BP or cholesterol targets in 17 years of diabetes (at one point my cholesterol was 2.3!). But I do find it hard to control the blood sugars enough to get my hba1c that low. It's improving, but a long way to go yet.

How many units of Rapid Insulin?

I'm a mathematician, so I like numbers, and I also like weighing things! My approach is: Weigh the shreddies - say you have 70g. Look at the packet, it will say something like 74g per 100g Do the multiplication: 74*70/100 = 51.8g carbohydrate so - about 5 units for that. Repeat with milk...

    A new needle every injection

I always carry my pen when I'm out the house, but on its own with the needle attached. It fits easily into a pocket alongside my mobile. I only carry the meter out if I'm staying the night somewhere or driving, and that's a new thing. My biggest concern right now is that carrying spare...

    A new needle every injection

Ah - so you carry your pen around in the case it came with? (I think I might have that in the back of a cupboard somewhere).

    Cheating!

How much they affect you will depend on when you eat them. If you are stable, haven't eaten for a while, and pig out, then they will cause a bit of a spike (although, not too bad compared to Haribo!) If you have a small portion as a desert after a low-gi meal, then they'll not make much of an...
