    Hospital "discharging" type 1 diabetics!

Can`t agree more about treatment depending on the quality of the GP / surgery. An extreme example, but my best friend was suffering from persistent headaches and cough a few years ago, his GP kept telling him to get more sleep, stay out of smoky bars etc etc, then finally he was diagnosed with...

    Hospital "discharging" type 1 diabetics!

It was cheap of me to name the hospital...but cheap of them to discharge me. No doubt if I have any diabetes issues from this point, my GP will be at hand to suggest taking a paracetamol or getting more sleep. Looking forward to it already :)

    Hospital "discharging" type 1 diabetics!

Thanks, that sounds like good advice. I also kind of agree to the principle of health professionals focussing on priorities, but it wasn`t really "sold" to me like that...

    Hospital "discharging" type 1 diabetics!

Yesterday I attended my annual diabetic review at my hospital hospital name removed. I was greeted by a new consultant, and following a very limp handshake he skimmed over the usual questionnaire, skipped the parts about checking sensation in my feet etc, then announced that, having been...

Local surgery bombarding with BP requests...

I totally agree, the French system is rigorous in comparison. I was based over there for a short period (working for a pharmaceutical company, ironically), and they are very regimented with regard to diabetics. It is worth adding, given what I`ve already said, that their employment situation is...

Local surgery bombarding with BP requests...

Thanks for the replies - some interesting points. I am indeed grateful that my GP takes an interest in my condition, and certainly feel it is more wrong that some seem not to. I suppose my point, which most people replying seemed to get, is that it is inefficient and a waste of time to have to...

Local surgery bombarding with BP requests...

I`ve recently started receiving letters from my local GP requesting that I go in for a blood pressure check. One even threatened to withold my medication if I didn`t oblige... As I have my blood pressure checked at my annual diabetic review at the hospital, why is it that the GP surgery can`t...

    Starchy carbs

oops, just found about 10,000 posts on carbs on the forum...sorry, I`m new!

    Starchy carbs

Sorry to jump on the back of this...I just wondered, as a Type 1 who likes endurance sports (marathons and sportive cycling), I rely on eating above average levels of carbohydrates in order to fuel the distance. This occasionally makes blood sugar management harder than if I did less sport and...

    Hardened arteries

Sounds like good advice all round - manage cholestorol, eat healthy fats, exercise well, and maintain good blood sugar levels. Now all I have to do is persuade her (plus have a word about coming down the stairs too quickly!)

    Hardened arteries

All people with diabetes- regardless of type are entitled to a 12 monthly review I just found out, she was meant to have an annual review, but there was an admin oversight at the hospital, and nobody contacted her, so she went 2 years without a review. Personally, I`d have contacted the...

How long was I diabetic before I was diagnosed?

I had symptoms but didn`t think any of them were strange. I was 24, it was 1995 and a very hot summer. I would go out drinking at the weekend, wake up the following day very thirsty, drink loads of sugary drinks (Lucozade, Vimto etc !), and urinate a lot - I was thirsty because I`d got drunk the...

    Hardened arteries

Yeah, totally agree, I couldn`t believe it. I`ll check nothing got lost along the communication trail, but if true it really is shocking. She`s based in Ireland, not sure that the approach is any different there or not. She was recently (2 years ago) switched from tablets to insulin injection, I...

    Hardened arteries

My mother in law is Type 2 and recently broke her leg. A couple of weeks after the break, an xray detected hardened arteries in her legs, the initial assumption being that it`s linked to her diabetes control. There are a few issues in terms of review (her annual review was pushed out to every 5...

Why do blood sugar levels rise after some sport?

That`s a really useful reply, thanks for that. Interesting too - I think the article I read about lactate suggested that, whilst training aerobically, if your blood sugar starts to fall (as you`d intuitively expect after a while), a short spell of anaerobic work could potentially be used to...
