Every little kid is hungry all the time, thirsty, and has to pee a lot....those are symptoms of a healthy growing child. Teenagers are even worse.

To put some of the symptoms into perspective. In my case:
I was peeing 20+ times a day and woke up nearly every hour throughout the night.
I was drinking probably 3 gallons of water a day and still had constant dry mouth.
I was eating around 5000 calories and still losing weight.

Yes, if you're worried buy a meter from the pharmacy and test her every so often. Note: if you test within 2 hrs from her last meal, it's likely her levels will be slightly elevated. That's normal for the most part.

A child's symptoms and their sudden decline in health, can be different from an adults, therefore it must be acted upon asap.

Which is exactly why I said she should get more tests done:
Get a meter, and have more tests performed. Hopefully, your daughter is just a going through a growth spurt.

Let's keep in mind that she's already seen a doctor about this once and nothing was found so it's as if she hasn't already taken some action. That certainly doesn't mean she shouldn't pursue further testing, but it's very easy to misinterpret the telltale signs of diabetes .

I know from only too well regarding a child's 'health issues' and it can be staring the medical profession in the face and still, a misdiagnosis is made.

Best of luck @Amy13 , please could you keep us updated ?

Hi there, I'm new to this so don't really have a clue in regards to diabeties but I had a question..... Can one random finger prick test determain whether in fact you are diabetic or not? I ask because my daughter has all the symptoms of it and this has been going on for nearly two months now, yesterday at the doctors they used that little machine to test her blood and said it was fine. Obviously I was relieved but after I just wasn't sure how reliable it was and surly it would depend on if she had eaten, what she had eaten or activity and she had asked me none of these questions ? Is there still a chance my daughter could be diabetic or am I worrying for no reason? Any advice would be really appreciated! :)

Amy; the best way of checking is not using finger prick tests but doing simple urine tests for glucose. I'm not sure where you are located but in the UK you can buy a tube of test strips from a chemist for about £5.

You can also buy urine test strips for ketones. If your daughter has any of those then you need to get straight back to the doctor without delay.

I say this because I spoke to a pediatric diabetes specialist because I was doing a bit of 'dad worrying' about my son. He said the urine test was best; if there is glucose in there then it is a clear sign of diabetes which finger prick tests may not accurately demonstrate (because of the fluctuating nature of blood sugars).

Best

Yes this is true! Hopefully it's nothing, she's had no sickness or diarrhoea but does always complain her tummy hurts so I suppose it could be just pot luck of a "viral" thing lasting 2 months! xx

Two months is quite a while, but sometimes the immune system can't fight back and one infection or a virus leads to something else and so on.

I wish we could help more, but try keep your chin up, you're a good mum and doing all the right things :)

Hi, i would second the ketone sticks to test her urine, it also doesnt hurt her like a fingerprick! I was advised by docs that this was best way to keep an eye on my kid.

Hello there ,
the doctor is not going to investigate anything , you have to investigate it yourself i am afraid.
I would say get urine test strips and check if she has any sugar in urine if she has any then unfortunately she is diabetic.
GOOD LUCK xxx

Hello,
When I was diagnosed I had a virus first, which I never fully recovered from and it spilt over into becoming diabetic. I had a bad cold type virus and as that started to wear off I didn't feel any better, I was hungry, thirsty, tired. I was 9 so was able to understand more how I was feeling. I was taken to the doc after my mum tested and my sugar was 28mmol. I was going to the toilet more frequently and was always thirsty, but the amount I was going to the toilet wasn't that excessive really.

I have also had a boy in my care when I was working in a pre school that became diabetic, he displayed absolutely no symptoms in nursery despite his parents concerns, it seemed to be at night that his symptoms became apparent. The only day he displayed symptoms was the day his parents had the docs app booked. He has constantly asked for drinks (which j have to him) and had seemed lethargic and not right. I phoned his parents and said that if they weren't already taking him to the doc I would advise they took him to a and e. His body had obviously been managing throughout the day, but in that day it couldn't and when he went to the doc it was to high to read. He was rushed to a and e where his bloods were 49mmol and they didn't know how he was still walking and talking.

I hope it's not for your little girl! But Itrust your instincts. Book an app for after breakfast and see what her sugar is. Any worsening of her condition and get her checked without hesitation. Just knowing from my experience how fast they can go down. I hope you get your answers soon, as I said trust your instinct, no one knows your daughter better than u X X x
