dafne

Hi I am a new member to the Diabetes Forum, but I have had Diabetes since 1975. My daughter is a nursing sister in Glasgow and has today told me about DAFNE. I am very interested in this but checking on the list of places that it is carried out I find that the nearest one to me is 30 miles away. Does anyone know if I would still be able to attend a course if it was not at my local hospital ?

I too am from glasgow and i know that the do dafne at the victoria infirmary but i think it is the case that once your name is down you could be waiting a long time before you get on the course

Thanks for your reply. I forgot to mention that I lived in Shropshire it is just my daughter who lives in Glasgow. I would image that there would be a waiting list as there is with anything that is good.

I did my dafne at a hospital over 60 miles from where I live. I think it depends on the relationship you have with your GP - mine was very happy to help and to refer me. It's worth a try.

I was going to be doing this as im very active (bodybuilder) and controlling my sugar level can be hard at times. Now they are putting me on a course called styles. Should be a big benefit :)

Hi there,

I was in a similar (but sort of opposite) situation. I attend a diabetes clinic which is not in my PCT area. They wanted me to attend a DAFNE course. All they did was write to my local PCT asking them to provide funding for me to attend the course at the hospital where I go for diabetes treatment. Once they obtained agreement, they booked me onto one of their own courses.

I believe that many PCTs have reciprocal agreements with other local PCTs to provide services that they don't provide themselves across all sorts of medical areas. So, I guess that if you can obtain the support of your diabetes specialist (GP, hospital consultant or DSN) they should be able to obtain funding for you to attend a course in another PCT area if your own PCT doesn't offer the service.

Only problem might be is that there tends to be ptreey long waiting lists for them, so don't expect to get one quickly.

Good luck.

Hi there

Many thanks for all your replies. I am attending my diabetic clinic on Thursday this week so I will ask about it and see where I stand. Maybe I will be lucky and be put on a waiting list somewhere
