Pregnant, Covid - don’t know what to do?

Hi, I took a pregnancy test yesterday which came back positive. I am around 5 weeks pregnant and although not planned we are excited.

I phoned the doctor who told me to book in for my 12 weeks scan at the hospital but to do nothing different even though I have type 1 diabetes. I have not got an increased dosage of folic acid. I am wondering whether I should be going for an earlier scan? Or what to do? Because of covid nothing is open and difficult to get in. My HBA1c is usually a little on the high side but getting it down.

I basically just need someone to tell me what to do as I feel very lost and reading online is making me scared!

Thanks,
Chloe

Is this your GP or a diabetic specialist?

1) Assuming you live in the UK.
2) Assuming you live near to a hospital with a diabetic clinic.

You need to contact that clinic and get put in touch with the diabetic pregnancy clinic (or whatever they call it).

I'm probably out of date (my youngest is 24) but I'd expect them to want to help you to get your bg levels as low as they can go, way before the 12 week test.

I don't see why they can't do this remotely (start keeping a record of food and glucose levels) and if you're not already using a libre then you should be able to get one on prescription now.

I wouldn't be too worried about the scan, though the folic acid is a slight concern.

Diabetically, the most important thing is to keep your blood sugars as normal as possible, and you should be able to do that remotely.

Congratulations and good luck.

Hi and thank you.

yes live in the UK and yes live near the clinic.

I will phone them on Tuesday and see what they say.

i have just been to the pharmacy and picked up folic acid. This is in 400 tablets.

I have a libre so am in control of my levels, trying to keep them as low as possible.

I can’t do much until the diabetic clinic opens on Tuesday so in the mean time do you think I should take the folic acid and carry on keeping my bloods low? Is there anything else I should be doing?

thanks,
Chloe

Hi Chloe,
Just read your posts and wanted to say I hope everything is going really well and you’ve had loads of support. We’re TTC and it’s all very stressful with covid chaos!
