Dear friends

I am an Omnipod 5 closed loop user. I am deaf and wear hearing aids which I take out at night. As a result I do not hear any alerts / alarms. I always ensure that the volume on my PDM is turned up fully at night and that my PDM is on a hard surface. The alerts / alarms can go off anything between 6 - 14 times. I only find out that the alarms have gone of when I look at my PDM in the morning and see the notifications that have occurred overnight.

I have contacted both Insulet and the Pump team. The response from Insulet is to go through how to adjust the volume on the PDM. After I reassure them that I do know how to do this they tell me there is nothing they can and to contact the Pump Team. Insulet is aware that this is a problem.

The response from the Pump Team is that there is nothing they can do apart from offer the same advice as Insulet and to contact Insulet. They have said Dexcom G6 would help here but they are not allowed to prescribe it. They say they are restricted in what they prescribe due to Government guidance. The only way I can move to Dexcom G6 is if I pay for it myself. Unfortunately I cannot afford to do this.

Sugar Pixcel has been suggested. Unfortunately Insulet tell me that the Omnipod 5 PDM will not connect with Sugar Pixcel.

Any help, suggestions or advice would be appreciated. I am so frustrated and do not sleep because I am worried about going low in the night which is something that happens regularly.

I'm not an omnipod user so clutching at straws! Does the pdm have a vibrate setting? My tslim does and I sleep with it in a velcro belt set to vibrate at night so it doesn't wake my husband. If the pdm does this could you sleep with that in a similar way during the night?

It's not an answer to your question, but if you're going low overnight regularly, it would be worth looking at why this is happening.

Hi sninge

Thanks for you suggestion. The PDM does have a vibrate setting. I will certainly this.

Thanks again

Hi Hopeful34

Thanks for your suggestion. I agree sorting this would help. Will look into this

Thanks again

It looks like you could use a mobile phone instead of the pdm to control your pump. There are multiple different alarm tones and volume levels you can set on a phone, as well as vibrate. Just wondered if you would be able to hear any of them better?

Morning Hopeful34

Thanks for you reply. I would definitely hear alarms on my mobile as there are many more Melodie’s and you can turn up the volume louder. Unfortunately with the Omnipod 5 alarms only come via the PDM. There is an app available in the USA but not here. To get alarms on my phone I would need to switch to manual and loose out on automatic.

I am beginning to wonder if I need to switch to a different pump. Not even sure if that is possible. I think looking into why I am going low overnight is the way forward. Thanks for suggesting that

thinking a little out of box. Other small thing not sure if you've considered, due to saying can turn up volume louder on your mobile, have you looked into perhaps a microphone and speaker turned up louder maybe something like that could work. bit like how a pa system works just with it always always enabled.

have a question, in regards to sensor data is that uploaded somewhere in realtime?

Thanks for your reply. I have been using a Chimeflash which specifically designed for those with hearing loss. It does work albeit sporadically. It comes with a sensor which I sit the PDM on. When the PDM alarms go off on the door bell sounds. As I say it does not always pick up on alarms.

The sensor data is uploaded after you link your PDM to Glooko. You just have to sync the data regularly.

Thanks again

Would a miaomiao or similar work? (assuming you're on libre2+). Back before the libre 2 came out, there was no way to get alarms from the reader, but you could get a device like a miaomiao which worked by regularly doing an NFC scan of the libre sensor then talking back using bluetooth to an app on a nearby phone such as XDrip+. And on the phone/XDrip+, you can go to town on alarms.

I've not used one since I got a libre2, but I wonder if they might still work.

(and yes, I agree the Omnipod's alarms can be more subtle than may be appropriate)

Thanks for your reply. I will investigate this. I did have a a miaomiao previously, may still have it.

Thanks again
