Alternative to humalog

My pharmacist has just told me that my usual humalog ([emoji[emoji6][emoji6]][emoji[emoji6][emoji6]]) is out of stock, they don’t know when/if it’ll be back, so I’ll need to get my GP to prescribe something different.

Now I know that I’ll probably be limited to [emoji[emoji6][emoji6]][emoji[emoji6][emoji6]] strength insulins, so will need to adjust dosages, but is there a list somewhere of the quick acting insulins that are still available/not being discontinued?

Thanks

Hi, your post is a little confusing because of the numbers (a fault that seems to occur with certain ways of accessing the forum). Are you able to restate exactly what form of humalog you are using??? (I'm using standard humalog which, as far as I know, is not being discontinued, but I believe some of the humalog/humalin variants may be going?

However, I've looked back at your previous posts and believe you may be using humalog U200?

I'm not finding anything on the internet to suggest there is currently a shortage but that doesn't mean there isn't... It may be worth checking with other pharmacies?

However, humalog U100 should be freely available in the worst case scenario, but you'd have to inject bigger volumes. (If you go this route, i'd suggest using a re-usable pen rather than a disposable one, just to minimise on fridge space used by your insulin.)

Looks like lyumjev is another fast acting insulin with U200 format?

Disclaimer, I haven't used lyumjev but my limited understanding is that it acts a bit faster than humalog?

If I'm right that you are using humalog U200 can I suggest that you (or ask a member of the mod team) alter the title to add a U200?

Good luck, hopefully your GP can help.

(Edited to correct "bigger doses" to "bigger volumes", the "dose" of insulin should remain the same)

Thanks - yeah I don’t know what happened with those numbers!

Yes I’m on u[emoji[emoji6][emoji6]][emoji[emoji6][emoji6]], so just looking at potential alternatives.

I don’t have a huge amount of faith in the local pharmacy, but they refused to give me my prescription to try elsewhere as it contained other items they’d already dispensed.

I’m hopeful that the GP may be more clued up, but have often found that not to be the case with diabetes unfortunately.

so will need to adjust dosages
If you have to switch to U100 the dose stays the same as with U200. The pens are designed differently so pens for U200 give half the volume of insulin. If you needed 20 units of U200 you'll need 20 units of U100.

The action time of NovoRapid is very similar to Humalog, so if you are content with how Humalog works for you, this would be a good alternative.
I prefer Fiasp or Lyumjev myself because it works a little faster.
Why won’t it let me type two hundred??
I never had this happen to me either, I use the forum through the browser (Chrome) on both phone and computer.

It does this via the forum rather than web site. Hugely irritating! As I prefer to use the forum I get round it by just typing out the numbers in word form. For yourself posting dosages it may be easier to log on via the actual website to save time and make it clearer.

I’m not sure what you mean here? I am on the forum which is on the website. I use the forum by logging onto the website via safari on my iPad.

I think others access the forum via tapatalk and the app but I’ve never done that.

For those wondering why they sometimes get all those weird emoji numbers things
If you use the DCUK app it is now an old version & the updates are still under development so doesn’t post well at times
If you post using Tapatalk it can sometimes with numbers (not always) glitch with the forum software

The best way as @Lakeslover & @becca59 say is to post directly on the forum website using your browser.
I use a tablet 100% of the time & very occasionally my phone but not great on my phone as I struggle with the small screen :)
