Had enough today...thinking of not eating anymore..can't control my blood sugars...
Hi @shell bull , I'm sorry to hear you are struggling.

Would you like to tell us a bit more about yourself? What type of diabetes do you have, what medication or insulin are you on, what do you typically eat?

If we know a bit more, maybe we have some ideas on what could help.

How long have you been trying ? If you are new it is not easy and takes several months to get results or it has with me

Had type 1 for 43 years,I'm now 54..nothing I do is right..I just want to give up now
Diabetes burn-out is very common, I second contacting your diabetes team to let them know things are not going well at the moment, and can they maybe help.

You can also try to contact your GP to ask about help and reassess your antidepressants to see if something else is needed.

You're 43 years in already, and you say you have trouble getting things right with your diabetes.
How are you deciding on doses and timing, and correction doses? Do you adjust according to carbs? Do you use a CGM to see what patterns there are to find?
If you can find the courage and energy to share your findings, we'll be more than willing to think with you and share what works for us.
Other peoples lived experience made all the difference for me when I was starting to get the hang of insulin dosing and timing.

I fully understand your position. Social contact is vital. Is there a group or social activity you might join in your neighbourhood? I meet in a group every 2nd Saturday of the month. In June I had a chance conversation with a new member who said "This is the first time I have socialised for years!" You have already made a significant move by joining this Forum and sharing your feelings. I hope you succeed in climbing out of a very dark place. Keep posting! I wish you all the best.

Hi @shell bull and welcome to the forums.

I am really sorry you are currently struggling.

Depression and diabetes don't make happy bedfellows. It's easy to get (more) depressed when your blood sugars are uncooperative, and depression (in my opinion) makes it harder to control your levels. So you can get stuck in a vicious circle.

Many (most? I certainly have) struggle with our levels at times and there are any number of posts on here from people suffering with diabetes burnout and/or depression. So you aren't alone.

Speaking as a long term T1 (since age 8) the improving tech can help (glucometers were the first big change and now cgms and pumps are even better). I know the NHS can be glacially slow at rolling out pumps but you should at least have a cgm. (Not that that is always a help when your bgs refuse to cooperate and your cgm is telling you so.)

@lovinglife has given you some links which may be useful to you. We're an international forum so though it's quiet in the UK night there is usually someone around to listen if you just want to vent and to try to help if you want to talk about your specific diabetic challenges (eg dawn phenomena, hypos, bgs going up or down for no reason at all).

Please do reach out to your diabetic team as well. Insulin needs and ratios can change and sometimes long term T1s can get left behind because they assume you've had training you never had. (eg Have you been on a DAFNE course?)

Sending you some virtual hugs from New Zealand.

One thing I can confirm, even this does not work

I recently did not eat for 6 or 7 days, and whilst there were no extreme highs or lows, the same effort is still needed to control the BG, only bonus was no carb counts …. Only other benefit was I lost about 16 pounds in weight…. But not in a healthy way..

I think if you talk to your GP or care team they can refer you to get help with the mental side of dealing with this…. Also they can probably help further into getting better control (if needed)

In my case highs and lows annoy me, but sitting down and going through everything with them, they think I actually have very good control I’m just a little over obsessed with the numbers

You you have poor control then maybe there are other ways they can help like change of insulin, or introducing another drug along with the insulin, my dad has had great results from the addition of low doses of metformin

I can relate to your story. I was dx'd in 2017 with T2, then had a bad DKA episode in 2019, in ER for four days where they dx'd me as T1. I am almost 78. I have been on low carb since 2017, but sometimes that doesn't work.

I, too, get very annoyed and frustrated with highs and lows. There seems to be no rhyme or reason for it. Also, my doctor thinks I'm doing well for my age. He thinks my A1C should be 6 or over. I don't.

I'm worse in the a.m. Here are some examples: "7.7, 10 u, 10.6"; "7.1, 10 u, 15.9"; "6.8, 10 u, 10.8"; "7.4, 11 u, 13.7"; "11.2, 12 u, 12.3"; "7.4, 10u, 13.5" and this morning - "8.0, 11u, 15.0". I am really confused with the numbers especially since I eat the exact same breakfast every day. I know, I'm boring. Then it can fall rapidly.

This has been a really cold winter for us over here in PEI, Canada, so my dog and I aren't getting as much exercise. I would love to not eat for a week so I can lose 20 lbs. I know exercise makes a big difference, especially in hot, humid weather.

I use Tresiba at night and Humalog with meals. I tried Metformin at the beginning, but it upset my stomach. Is your dad T1? I went low carb and exercise and for two years everything was great. Then came T1 - it's been a roller coaster ever since. If I had a choice I would go back to T2 in a nanosecond. It's so much easier to control with diet and exercise.

Diabetes is not something I would wish on anyone.
