Not sure what to do about changing from pork insulin. I haven't felt good for a while. Should I give it a go, Jim?

Good morning, im jim from Leicestershire, 67 this year. Type 1 since 1985. I take Hypurin Isophane and Hypurin Neutral pork insulin. I inject 50 units of isophane and 25 units of neutral insulin in the morning, and the same at night. It takes about 3 hours for my sugar to drop from 17 to 7. I can then eat something, 2 rounds of toast, a few baked beanz and wack up it goes again for hours. My insulin doesn't work like it once did. im not very active now and big around the tum. What I wanted to ask really is the guy wants me to change to Tresiba and Fiasp insulins. I'm so anxious to do so, I don't have people around me, no diabetic nurse at the GP surgery, and help from the general hospital, £40 taxi each way, and then it's me who will have to deal with it all. Thanks for listning i dont no what to do. Take care, everyone. Jim leicester. I tried to write back to you, but it wouldn't send. Thanks for writing

Is there no bus that can get you near the hospital ?
that would be free ?
Ihave no experience with animal insulins I use Trujeo and Trurapi
Trujeo 46 units once a day
Trurapi 8 units 4 times a day before meals
how fr is your Dr ?

Hi, my friend, the buses dont go straight there, it's tough to get there im not in the city. I need to apply for another bus pass. I sent that photo, and they rejected it with my glasses on, it was taken 15 years ago, but I don't have many photos. All the best. jim

HI @jim brad and welcome to the forums. T1 since 1970 here.

A couple of thoughts from me

1) do you have a laptop or tablet that wold allow you to talk to the hospital team via a video call? Otherwise could you communicate via email.

2) If you are starting every day with a bg of 17 then I think you might be better off changing something. As a child up to the early 80s I also was on twice daily insulin (can't remember whether it was porcine or bovine) and I had fixed meals and carbs allowances. It sounds similar to what you have now? In the early to mid 80s my team changed me to MDI (multiple daily injections) and it was life changing (in a good way). Although I had more injections I was able to adjust my dose to improve my bg and I also had freedom to change my meal times and carb amounts. But it does rely on you being able to carb count and do some (simplish) numerical calculations. So in your position I would jump to move to the new insulin regime but I don't know how confident you would be to calculate insulin doses.

3) There is a course called DAFNE which might help you learn the new regime and also an online course

Just one final comment. I assume you are using a cgm?

Anyway, good luck with it all.
