Im well and truly stumped for snack ideas, especially bedtime/night time when I get cgm warning of getting low. I need lowest protein because I have ckd plus gout and need to avoid it, lowest fat because I end up in hospital from gallbladder otherwise, low sugar because I have very high cholesterol which os bad with heart problems, and of course high carbs cause spikes. Im pulling my hair out! Oh and I have some chewing issues. Ideas anyone?? :arghh:

Boiled eggs, soft fruit such as oranges and pulpy type
eggs are high protein and I eat fruits but of course they dont fill or do anything to stop going low soon after. I have oats with bran and chia but theres only so much a person can eat before getting tired of it, and I dont even like them. I dont honestly expect a solution but its nice to vent. Nightmare.

Hi @shanjo , sorry I can’t think of any thing for snack ideas as I don’t have experience of being on insulin, however you seem to have ruled out all the major food groups! I’m posting as has no one suggested you have your gall bladder removed, so you can at least eat more fat?

Hi,

What insulin/insulins are you on?

Maybe the first thing to do is to work out why you are going low at bedtime and see if you can prevent that?

actually got on the ward bed at one point but surgeon refused because my heart was playing up. Back on the list I got life threatening pancreatitis and 3 months in bed, tried to have the ercp but they hadnt sedated me and I freaked and couldn't do it, lost faith in that idea ever after, just cant face it, so stone cleared and eventually recovered, twice since then Ive been in hospital with the gallbladder blockage causing infection, one of the times told I should go to what I call intensive care, where you get sedated on machine and most don't wake up, so I declined and again came home to improve, so am still waiting and still working on improving strength. So yes I need it out but so far it hasn't been possible. Currently waiting for an ultrasound to see if stones cleared and then, God willing, they will operate. I cant have an mri as I have pacemaker, hence waiting list for the flipping scan. Try chasing it but nobody answers the phone and is why I still have the thing, I am high risk so they are naturally super cautious. Im also in my seventies so that doesn't help but Im a determined person so keep on looking for things to help myself, realistically I know theres no option for low fat low sugar etc but doesn't stop me hoping.

I use abasgalar pen once daily but it seems I have been having too much, nurse talked me through reducing further so hopefully Im heading the right way but that doesnt make choosing foods any easier.

Reducing it (as your nurse has suggested) should help in the long term. In the meantime maybe increase your carbs a bit in your evening meal. If I go low I eat a couple of jelly babies then some carbs. I appreciate how difficult it is to select which carbs with your various issues.

Perhaps try natural yoghurt (fat level to suit you) mixed with some milled seeds and some berries. Made earlier and left in the fridge it thickens to more of a porridge consistency
