hi there,
i used to be diabetic and was on 2 metformin 1 in the morning and 1 at night and after losing weight i was cut down to 1 metformin in the moring, after my next hba1c test the doctor took me off it.which i was so happy with.
i was 19st 10 and i got down to 12st 7 in just under 1 year, thanks to eating less and exersicing more,i used a crosstrainer every day for 90 mins, some days i would use it twice a day.

here are some of my readings from the doctor

09/2011
hba1c 37
bp 152/84
bmi 31.7

02/2012
hba1c 35
chol 3.9
bp 133/69
bmi 28

09/2012
hba1c 35
chol 3.5
bp 148/74
bmi 25.5

i am worried about mood swings and want to know what a safe hba1c level is ?
can anybody help me with this?
thanks in advance for any help given

My chart on the wall just says that the target range for a non-diabetic is usually 20 to 42.

For a diabetic the target range is 47 to 58.

My nurse suggested I aim for 52 or less so I suppose she feels that lower is better.

As to any of those numbers being unsafe I am unable to say but when I managed to get as low as 42 I felt pleased.

Hi. NICE guidelines suggest an upper limit of 7.5% (58 mmol) when you should move to insulin i.e. it's effectively what they set as an upper 'don't go over' limit. In general the advice is to stay between around 5.5% (37 mmol) to 6.5% (47 mmol). Your figures appear to be very good.
