Hi to everyone on here first of all.

I have just been diagnosed with type 1 a few days ago still in a bit of shock with my diagnosis to be honest but I'm eager to be positive about it and learn quick about how to manage my diabetes. Been hard work so far I was just discharged from hospital yesterday and took my first hypo last night was scary stuff I didn't know I was having it just felt a little dizzy and my partner suggest i checked my blood sugar level as I had went really white i didn't really have enough to eat and my dietician said that and too much insulin could have been the likely reason for the hypo but I managed to deal with it fine. I have been ok today no hypos. My blood levels have been high all day today I have eat more today than i have on the other days since being diagnosed so is that why i have been high ? i haven't learned how to increase/decrease my insulin yet I'm attending my local diabetes clinic later in the week but I'm speaking to my nurse on the phone in the morning about how much insulin to take but any advice in the mean time would be good Iv been looking about the forum the last few days and see there's lots of good info on here just struggling to take some of it in and understand it all as its all so new to me. Any tips would be good I don't know anyone who is type 1 so thought be good to ask about here where there is plenty of people in the same position or have been in the same position as myself.

Re: New type1

Will take a while to get dosage sorted, probably a bit early to start playing around with your suggested doses. Hopefully u and your team wil get them sorted soon. Excercise of any kind can bring on hypos, so, always have fast acting glucose available such as lucozade, full sugar pop etc. don't need alot though otherwise u will push ur sugars right up. You will soon learn to match your qa (quick acting) insulin to the amount of carbs you are eating. There will be alot of trial and error at the start. Ask anything you like, someone will soon reply.

Re: New type1

Welcome Paul,

I'm relatively newly diagnosed myself (just ten weeks ago) so I can fully appreciate what you're going through and how much information is being thrown at you.

Just take it steady for now and keep talking to the specialist diabetes nurses, let them know what's going on with your sugars and doses and take their advice on any changes. Eventually you'll want to start carb counting and varying your dosage accordingly, but before you do I'd spend a lot of time on research first. There's plenty of information out there on the web, and I'd also reccommend a book "Think Like a Pancreas" excellent value and full of great information.

If you do exercise, make sure you do it regularly to try and keep your insulin sensitivity fairly stable, and always take your testing kit and some easily accessible carbs with you.

Last bit of advice, relax, stress screws around with your sugars as well.

Re: New type1

Hi Paul.

Don't worry, you'll get the hang of it all! I was diagnosed at the end of February and I started on similar doses to you, I now require only a quarter of that. And even less sometimes. Once you learn to carb count it is a lot more flexible, but don't rush to that stage. Let your body settle into more normal blood glucose levels first.

At this stage you honestly can't test too often. It's important to learn how your body reacts to different things (other than the obvious food!). As Brett mentioned exercise can drop your sugar levels, but in some people it can also raise them. Many people find stress raises their blood sugar.... For me it drops like a stone. There is no way of knowing without testing.

I write EVERYTHING down. It's easier to spot patterns that way. And then in a few weeks (or months if that's how long you need) when you're starting to adjust your doses yourself you can then use these patterns to make sure you stay within range :)

Ask all the questions you need. We've all been in your position at one time or another!

Early days Paul and I'm sure in time you'll get the insulin doses right, good that you've experienced your first hypo and know what to look out for

Welcome to the forum btw!

Hey guys, I am also newly diagnosed type 1 only 3 months ago and still getting my head around what it's all about! I think it's all about just giving yourself time to get used to all of the changes that come with being diabetic, but I am positive that over time it'll all become natural to us. I am also new to the forum having got a new phone and searched for diabetes apps, so looking forward to reading all your messages :) x
