When I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes by my GP, my wife and I never believed it. We played the game and I took the Metformin. For five weeks I was the embodiment of the walking dead. I started to believe it was my fault, maybe I was weak willed and making myself sick because I was feeling sorry for myself. After a particularly bad day I went back to the doctor. He said that this was my life and I just have to get use to it. Two weeks later, two stone lighter and as low as I've ever been, my wife forced me to A&E where I was immediately taken onto a ward for treatment.
I cant explain the relief. It's a strange world where you're actually happy to be diagnosed with type 1. After two days in hospital, I left a new man. Life is almost back to normal and my blood glucose hasn't slipped below 10 yet but wow, what a difference. I know we live in a world where it's easy to self-diagnose and we should be careful but in this case, it was well worth it.

Hello.

I think you'll find a lot of ppl on here who understand. Docs are quick to diagnose adults as T2 not T1. They did to me in June but luckily have me insulin and did the antibody tests, so I was lucky to get the right treatment straight away.

Great to hear you're handling it so well :)

Glad you got everything sorted out but it is worrying that you were mis-diagnosed in the first place.

At least you are receiving the correct treatment now.

I was also misdiagnosed as type 2 and sent away with tablets. However they really didn't agree with me so I made a fuss and went back a week later and was put on insulin whilst they waited for results of antibody tests. Felt so much better on insulin and this week my results have come back and confirmed im type 1. Not sure how you lasted on tablets for so long! After just 5 days of them I'd had enough! Glad you have correct diagnosis now x

I guess I must be an exception. I was correctly diagnosed by my GP as Type 1 right off the bat. Of course my BG was something silly like 36+ and ketones were maxed out on the old dip stick. After a few days in hospital I then got to work learning all I could and haven't been re-admitted since.

Even managed a few sick days without any assistance :)

My bloods were 36.4 at diagnosis and I had ketones, thirst, weight loss (10lbs in about 3 weeks), stayed overnight on insulin drip but was still discharged with metformin and gliclazide and discharge notes saying I was a nearly diagnosed type 2 :( several doctors admitted they weren't confident which type I was, hence the antibody tests. They said I was too old for type 1 but too young and not overweight for type 2.....glad I made the fuss and switched to insulin, although only 5 weeks since being admitted to hospital and I'm already fed up with the injections and finger pricking :( just having a bad week x

Just to add- my GP told me she thought it was type 1 straight away and was surprised when hospital wrote to say I was type 2.

My story is almost exactly the same as @Butterflykeri

High BG (28), ketones around 5, GP said T1, hospital specialist said type 2 but luckily kept me on insulin and did the antibodies "just in case" because I said the doctor told me it's T1.

I'm with you, aged 39, BG at 24+ and ketones +++. I think the only thing keeping my BG lower was the copious exercise leading up to diagnosis with a 23 mile fell race the weekend before (still no idea how I managed that in my condition:facepalm:)

Hospitalised one day, home the next, back to work on the Monday.

In my case I don't think there was ever any doubt

I was told I was type 2 at 29 years old. I had lost a lot of weight, was drinking non stop, had ketones, and high blood sugar. I was very tired, and had no energy. I was sent away with a diet sheet to follow. Fortunately my mum had a friend, who happened to be a diabetic consultant at a different hospital. He said it was highly unlikely I was type 2, and to insist on a second opinion, which I did. A new doctor agreed that I didn't fit the category of a type 2, and I was put on insulin, two injections a day to start with. That was 19 years ago, now on four injections a day. It seems a lot of adults get misdiagnosed as type 2, doctors should take more care, with their patients, its our lives they are responsible for..
