Pain while Nerves heal with better control

Hi, I have a question that I am hoping someone can help me with. I've been Type 1 for 23 years and recently (March '09) I really tightened up on my control. I'll just point out that my control has never been bad it's just that I needed/wanted to improve it. I live in the UK and attended a DAFNE course which covers MDI and Carb counting. Since being on the course I have much better control that I have ever had. My last HbA1C was 5.7% (well within normal limits) and my post meal spikes have been lower. I also tend not to snack between meals any more and I think this has also helped bring my BG down to a better average level. Also worth mentioning is that I have never had any Diabetic complications and I am quite fit and regularly exercise.

Anyway at the end of May I went away for a week on holiday and started to get some strange sensations.
Firstly I would get burning, like sunburn, on the backs of my hands, the back of my forearms and my shins. This feeling would come and go through the day and now I can go four or five days without getting it and then it will come back for no reason.
Secondly I get a pinched finger feeling at the end of my fingers, mostly on my right hand although I have had it a bit on my left. It feels like the end of the finger has been trapped in a door and while it's not painful it is irritating. The feeling comes and goes and moves from finger to finger, some days I have it all day, some just for an hour or two and some days not at all.
Thirdly I have been getting a tingling/numbness sensation in my hands and fingers, like a trapped nerve. Again this comes and goes and is mostly in my right hand and I ostly get it when I wake up in the morning.

I went to my GP who said it didn't sound like Neuropathy and put me on a course of anti-inflammitory drugs in case it was a trapped nerve. This has helped with the tingling/numbness especially in the morning but has not got rid of it completely. I saw my Diabetic consultant who did the filament test and vibration test, which were ok, and he said it wasn't Neuropathy, however he did focus mainly on the burning I was feeling because this is what I had worst at the time. I also then wrote to a different specialist who I have just come under and who is responsible for getting me on to a pump (he is also very good and well respected). He actually thinks that the Neuropathic symptoms I am getting are because my control has become much better since March and that my nerves are actually now starting to heal themselves. He also said that this could take months.

I haven't had any loss of sensation and I haven't had the problems aywhere else other than my hands. I have recently started taking Benfothiamine, ALA, Vit C and Primrose Oil, all of which I am told may help relieve Neropathic problems.

Has anyone else come across this, where they have tightened up their control and experienced Neuropathy symptoms because the nerves are actually starting to get better.
Thanks.

It's not unheard of to experience some of the symptoms you've described when control becomes much tighter, but I think it's more common when the change in levels is significant. So the question then becomes what was your control like before you tightened up? But it can't have been that bad because you are complication-free after 23 years?

Peripheral neuropathy also tends to be very symmetrical in presentation, so I'm guessing against neuropathy. But I'm not a doctor! Also a bit curious why anti-inflammatory drugs were prescribed for a trapped nerve? Maybe it's a good thing I'm not a doctor!

Hi there,

I too have been suffering strange prickling, burning, sore sensations in my skin on my left thigh, buttock and leg.

I had put this down to part of the sciatica symptoms and lower back pain I have been suffering as the doctor had just prescribed me with Ibruprofen.

However I too have recently dramatically improved my control (and whole grasp of my condition), so could this be due to better control and management having a temporary negative impact as you suggest ?

Without realising it I had a foot start to go numb about 5 years ago. I had a developing bunion on that foot so I decided that was the cause. I eventually had an op to fix the bunion so assumed that the numbness would be solved. Wrong! The other foot was probably starting to go numb around now but I was not focussed on it.
Retired and travelled around the world for 10 months drinking and eating out of control. Back home in late 2006. Blood test showed I was impaired. Feet became more numb. Mentioned it to my new doctor. Eighteen months ago I was now T2. Asked about my numb feet and it was agreed it could be neuropathy. Now my fingers were tingling, carpal tunnel was suggested but I thought trapped ulnar nerve looked more likely.
Cut this short, nerve conduction tests, I had lost lots of function in my feet. Went on medication to control diabetes... I had an HbA1c of 5.6 then but morning readings were about 5.8-6.3. I took control and found out about low carbing. HbA1c is now 5.0 and no meds especially statins as I see they can cause neuropathy for some!
I am taking all the supplements mentioned by Bernstein and Atkins in the hope I will get some reversal eventually and am prepared to wait while keeping my BGL as close to 4.7 as possible. Piece of cake (or not actually) for me! Pains, tingling in backs of legs especially at night. Fingers are back to normal. Bunion foot has been giving me gyp too! Sure that I can feel the texture of the carpet under my feet these days more that I once used to! All positive signs so I will report back my progress in about 12 months, just you wait and see!
