Hi, I have a question that I am hoping someone can help me with. I've been Type 1 for 23 years and recently (March '09) I really tightened up on my control. I'll just point out that my control has never been bad it's just that I needed/wanted to improve it. I live in the UK and attended a DAFNE course which covers MDI and Carb counting. Since being on the course I have much better control that I have ever had. My last HbA1C was 5.7% (well within normal limits) and my post meal spikes have been lower. I also tend not to snack between meals any more and I think this has also helped bring my BG down to a better average level. Also worth mentioning is that I have never had any Diabetic complications and I am quite fit and regularly exercise.
Anyway at the end of May I went away for a week on holiday and started to get some strange sensations.
Firstly I would get burning, like sunburn, on the backs of my hands, the back of my forearms and my shins. This feeling would come and go through the day and now I can go four or five days without getting it and then it will come back for no reason.
Secondly I get a pinched finger feeling at the end of my fingers, mostly on my right hand although I have had it a bit on my left. It feels like the end of the finger has been trapped in a door and while it's not painful it is irritating. The feeling comes and goes and moves from finger to finger, some days I have it all day, some just for an hour or two and some days not at all.
Thirdly I have been getting a tingling/numbness sensation in my hands and fingers, like a trapped nerve. Again this comes and goes and is mostly in my right hand and I ostly get it when I wake up in the morning.
I went to my GP who said it didn't sound like Neuropathy and put me on a course of anti-inflammitory drugs in case it was a trapped nerve. This has helped with the tingling/numbness especially in the morning but has not got rid of it completely. I saw my Diabetic consultant who did the filament test and vibration test, which were ok, and he said it wasn't Neuropathy, however he did focus mainly on the burning I was feeling because this is what I had worst at the time. I also then wrote to a different specialist who I have just come under and who is responsible for getting me on to a pump (he is also very good and well respected). He actually thinks that the Neuropathic symptoms I am getting are because my control has become much better since March and that my nerves are actually now starting to heal themselves. He also said that this could take months.
I haven't had any loss of sensation and I haven't had the problems aywhere else other than my hands. I have recently started taking Benfothiamine, ALA, Vit C and Primrose Oil, all of which I am told may help relieve Neropathic problems.
Has anyone else come across this, where they have tightened up their control and experienced Neuropathy symptoms because the nerves are actually starting to get better.
Thanks.
