I met up with an old friend the other week. She is a staunch Atkins advocate so when I told her I was low carbing we had lots to talk about. Later she e mailed me this link

I tried making them yesterday, but by the time I had...
Sainsburys sell pre sliced butternut squash which is a really nice alternative to pasta sheets. (I don't like to cheat, but found it really hard to slice the squash thinly enough myself!)
I had a chicken curry last night with cauliflower rice. Perfectly nice and very cheap! I assume you have tried this? (I've also tried the preprepared beetroot rice from Sainburys, but didn't find that so good)
I'm another low carb success story. I was told by my GP that I was diabetic, and given an appointment with the diabetic nurse four weeks later. In the meantime I found this forum and decided low carb was worth trying. I went ultra low carb at first, but did relax this a very little after...
I was diagnosed in February, and had my first retinal screening in July. My vision was blurry at diagnosis, but as others have said, getting your sugar levels down and stable will help that sort itself out.
I'm one of those people who can tolerate porridge :) I buy mornflake oatbran, and usually have it with a chopped up apple or some peanut butter (sometimes both if I'm feeling greedy! They reckon a 40g portion is 18.9g carbs, but I found that quantity was physically too much to eat, so I have...
It will depend a lot on your doctors surgery. I was told at a GP appointment that I was diabetic, to cut down on sugar, and given an appointment with the DN 4 weeks later. No other information whatsoever.
Luckily I found this forum and the help I have received here has been invaluable.
I...
She didn't say it out loud, but from the look on her face I felt she thought the 42 was some sort of fluke, and she wanted me re tested to see if it had gone back up :)
I agree. This forum has helped me so much. Even if I don't post I'm usually lurking to see what's going on. I find reading...
I went to see a GP today on an unrelated to diabetes matter. The Dr I have been seeing has left so I saw someone new. Having dealt with my other problem she did a medication review.
"So you're on Gliclazide and Metformin?"
"No I don't take any medication"
"Why?"
"Because it didn't agree with...
Do we have the same DN?? :) When I told her I wasn't going to take my tablets, she said if I wouldn't taken them I'd have to have insulin injections!!! I haven't been to see her since my last Hba1c, but part of me feels I should have made an appointment with her just to see what she has to say.
Generally my friends seem quite accepting of my "strange" dietary requirements.
My mother in law has been type 2 diabetic for 40 years, and of course she thinks she knows it all. But she has been insulin dependent as long as I've known her (nearly 20 years). She lives about 200 miles away...
My mum was diagnosed T2 at age 48. She died at 84. She was never insulin dependent and was only treated with metformin and gliclazide. By your calculations, she could have lived to 97 if she hadn't been diabetic! It was nothing diabetes related which killed her.
I'm a T2 diet controlled. When I was diagnosed I bought Micheal Mosely's book "the 8 week blood sugar recipe book" which has plenty of ideas for what you can eat. I don't eat any cereals, bread, potatoes, pasta etc.
I also got myself a fitbit and do at least 10,000 steps every day.
I was...
I have to say, the cake was a hit, with my mother in law, and me :)
I've only made a couple of low carb cakes, one was OK, the second one tasted truly awful, so I was pleasantly surprised at how nice this was. Thanks @Brunneria !
