    Home GTT attempt

I'm sorry if this information is already here, but I haven't been able to find it yet. Please redirect me if appropriate. What I would like to know is how to take a home GTT by ingesting a specific amount of something like Cola, or the like. Does anyone know what quantity I should take, and of...

    My Meter Readings

Yes - as this conversation is developing, so is my opinion - That the only way to do this is by running a sequence of home control solution readings. I think we really have to assume that the control solution falls about mid-way between the specified limits. If your meter reads consistently...

    My Meter Readings

The thing is that i took two readings around the hospital one, which I understand is super-accurate. If I consistently get such high readings with the control solution (e.g., around 8.5 - 9.0) I think it will be fair to say my meter is about 1 mmol/l over. No phone call.

    My Meter Readings

Yes, they are the legal ones; meters have to give readings less than 15% out more than 90% of the time (or something along those lines). Problem for me is that my actual readings appear to be at least 1.0 mmol/l above the correct readings, if the hospital is accurate. That's a lot.

    My Meter Readings

Could well be so. I just phoned them and the woman seemed to have no idea. I had to explain the question three times, and then she said she's never been asked that before. I find this incredible. What i also find hard to believe is the wide margin they permit in your test results. My strips...

    My Meter Readings

I will report back. Actually, though, I do think your interpretation (mid-point between stated tolerance limits) must be about right, as the law requires a certain percentage (+/-) accuracy.

OK - I'll ask the manufacturer then. Only way.

    My Meter Readings

Thanks! The way I understand it (or don't) is that the control solution is set at an accurate level of, say, 8.5, and the manufacturers are just saying any reading between 6.9 and 9.1 is within their specified level of accuracy. If I am getting that right, then, I would know exactly what the...

    My Meter Readings

I forgot to ask about this - My Accu Chek Compact Plus meter has not been checked against a control solution (just ordered one today), but when I recently went to the hospital to give my blood sample, I tested my BG level at home before and after the visit. My meter gave readings of 6.7 and 6.3...

    My experiences so far ...

And the very best to you - I hope things continue in this vein. :) Maybe I do have diabetes - so I'll certainly remain aware of the need for a bit of care. On the other hand, I will take a lot of convincing that my current state is harmful to me. It reminds me so much of the other yardsticks...

I don't know why i remember it as the bell X15, but I do. I can find other references to that name on t'internet too. Bell competed for the contract, but I don't know whether they were eventually involved. Do tell!

All reasonable comment, but I would just round it off by suggesting that even in accordance with your account, the label 'diabetic' becomes a lot less menacing than it started out. If someone can maintain normal glucose levels with diet and exercise, then diabetic they might still be, but they...

    My experiences so far ...

Yes, that's possible, and the GTT is worth doing. I'll do it at home shortly. My gripe is with the assumed wisdom that the body (e.g., pancreas) is not capable of repairing itself. I just will not accept this without some convincing evidence.

Thanks for the responses. Points taken, but I should add that my readings are still improving. Regarding the high readings (17.9) I am accepting that my system was knackered at that stage, and couldn't cope with all the glucose, but I still believe that I am headed for completely normal BG on...

    My experiences so far ...

I certainly don't want to come across as being pompous, self-opinionated or even pig-headed, so if what i am going to say here seems just wrong, or questionable, I warmly invite others to set me straight. However, having said that: Since I produced high fasting BG readings some two or three...

    Definition of Diabetes

Yes, she showed it to me!! She pointed to the starchy section as if it were all, so I pointed to the fruit. But is this right? Half of the food can be rich in carbs without the diet actually being 50% carbs. How is the 50% derived?

Gotcha. I really never experienced any symptoms at all below about 11 or 12 mmol/l

Thanks for that, Ken. It's a lot to get through though. Could you by any chance offer any feedback on my specific points? VIS: 1. I am still a diabetic. Why? Because of those high readings six months ago. So how long do I have to labour under this label? For life. So what makes me diabetic...

    Definition of Diabetes

But it's normal to test over 6. That's what happens during the healthy cycle. I'm sure you didn't pass out because it hit 6.2. I used to get up to 12 before noticing any symptoms. I eat quite a lot of carbs - a normal diet for me. The only change is less sticky liquid and some regular exercise...

She also directly challenged my claim that the NHS diet included 50% carbs. She said it was a lot less than that. I feel like lodging a complaint.
