    Detecting ketones in breath

Interesting. I've never smelt ketones on myself. Just wondered what they are supposed to taste like?

How often do you get formal bloods done?

Just wondering how often you get formal bloods done (eg. Hba1c) and all of that and also which bloods do you get done? My hospital consultant said I need to be monitored by my GP inbetween annual visits to the diabetes clinic. Is there any kind of time frame or guidance for how often you can...

    Type 1 and pH balance

Hi Vidareve Sorry haven't heard of the PH diet. I've read quite a few articles though saying there's nothing in the ph approach (for other health stuff though admittedly not seen any for diabetes). If you're going on an exclusion diet specifically for diabetes why not try Dr Bernstein's? Lots...

    Newby?

Hi Diane Sorry to hear you are unwell. Your levels sound diabetic to me and I certainly get fatigued and brain-fogged with a glucose reading of 12.9. Do persist with the issue. For about 6 months before I finally got my diabetes diagnosed, my symptoms of fatigue and tiredness were fobbed off...

Diabetics ‘at risk of progressive mental slowdown’

I saw this headline news on the times website this morning. Please tell me this isn't true. How much more discrimination are we going to get with headlines like these...... http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/u ... 447148.ece goji ps. I've got bad insomnia tonight - must be my mental...

thyroid problems and borderline( 6.7) diabetic

Hi Babs Welcome to the forum. There is a link between diabetes and thyroid disease. I've got both. Hopefully once you get your thyroid sorted out, you will start to see some weight loss, which in turn will help with the sugars. Low carb is definitely the way to go. I've lost a fair bit while...

    TEST STRIPS

Couldn't we set up as a distributor ourselves, buy test strips at cost price and then pass the savings on to the consumer? We could be called the Diabetics Collective or some such name. :D

Disposable equipment, they've finally gone too far!

THanks IHS It appears that with the extra postal and package it works out a bit more expensive than Abbot's strips. :( Still the 'Sidekick is a good idea in some ways for situations when you need a backup (eg. travelling).

Disposable equipment, they've finally gone too far!

Agree about the environmental aspect but have to say at £14.25 a pack, it's even cheaper than Abbot's Freestyle test strips. Maybe the competition from this device will drive other test strip prices down (well here's hoping). Ihs where did you see it selling for that price? When I googled, i...

    Fallen off the wagon

Well I'm ashamed to say that after writing my original post, I went and finished off all the orange creams. Then yesterday, I ate the remaining 6 strawberry creams (the ones that are so foul that everyone else in the house left as well!!   ), a panettone and 3...

    Fallen off the wagon

Hi all After three months successful low-carbing, I have fallen right off the wagon over chrimbo. In the past two weeks I seem to have consumed three quarters of a large tin of Quality Street, half a yule log, a large box of lebkuchen (those scrummy German gingerbread cakes), half a chocolate...

    Food scales

I've got the Salter 3003 (same as Hannah). I'm very pleased with it - mainly because it is quite simple to use and I can weigh liquid in it as well. I bought that model mainly because of the price (£20 marked down from £40). It seemed like a good deal. I just looked up the Salter 1450 that IanD...

    Benfotiamine

Just wondering if anyone who take Benfotiamine could let me know which brand you take, where you buy it from and what dosage you take. I want to buy some but would like a reputable brand. Also did you get blood tested before you started taking it? I read that it is fat soluble so wondered if a...

    Attitude of people around me

Sometimes it's the people who are half-educated about the condition that come out with the worst stuff. In a previous job (NHS multidisciplinary team), I had to sit at a desk next to a dietician and three nurses who on learning that I was diabetic, would spend every free minute lecturing me and...

    womens problems

Hi Coopergang Have you had your thyroid tested at all? Thyroid dysfunction can cause a lot of period problems and is more common in diabetics than non-diabetics. It's an easy test for your GP to do if she hasn't already. I hadn't heard about diabetes causing heavy periods before - just that...

Availability of another diabetic clinic when I move?

I don't know if GPs get some kind of cash incentive to treat inhouse but one GP I registered at was really reluctant to refer me to a clinic as he kept saying that he ran his own clinics. It was only after much pestering and a high Hba1c reading that I managed to get a referral. I wanted to be...

    what was your last hba1c

My most recent one was 6.4. It's come down from 8 in the summer so I'm quite pleased with that. And I get to take less insulin now. G :D

    Sharps disposal

Hi Jopar I think your point is totally valid. Needles I can understand but test strip blood is no more contaminating then say pooey nappies or menstrual blood. Not sure why councils would make a fuss about the test strips. :D

    BYETTA

Re: Anyone use Byetta? Is Byetta suitable for badly controlled Type 2s who are already on insulin? I'm just wondering as my dad has had Type 2 for about 9 years. Until his 40s, he was very skinny but now is very overweight (well only his stomach as the rest of him is thin - his fat...

Who has a necklace or bracelet id?

Has anyone ever seen any decent-looking plastic or cloth ID tags? It's just that metal (even gold and silver) makes my skin break out and so I have to avoid anything like that (I can't even wear a watch unless I cover the back of the watch with a plaster  ). I saw some rubber ones that...
