    Cycling has helped a lot

I did the upping the carbs thing when I'd go for bike rides (of a similar distance), but it didn't make much difference if I did or didn't actually. I think there's something in the 'getting quicker at turning to fat-burning' after a while on LCHF. Although I tend to use the prospect of a long...

Forgive me...I have sinned. On fat!!

Er....This isn't actually true. Your body CAN and DOES store fat - I assume you mean from dietary fat. Actually easier than it does carbs. However, it won't in the short term increase your blood sugar.

Forgive me...I have sinned. On fat!!

I've had one of those 150g packets in a single day before now, which is just about 100g fat, They're lush and more-ish the evil buggers. You think 'just one more'.... But I don't care, my BG is fine and I've given up carbs that's all, I've not become a monk or a vegan or some other kind of...

    Type 1 Sugar free

Replace them with an equivalent number of espressos and you should be fine. Or don't - it's the sugar in soft drinks that's the bad thing, the sweeteners are much safer, and caffeine's lovely, if you don't mind having an addiction. You might feel 0.1% better or something if you give it up...

    Attempting food lol

I find a medium jacket potato is fine for me, but that's just me - if you're new to this, you can't really beat trying things out and measuring your BG to see how it goes. It's all down to which gut bacteria you have in and in what proportion - some people will digest different things quickly...

    Pre-Workout Supplements

A cup of Bovril, no carbs, but a gram or two of salt. Or else I have a full English if it's a weekend. I generally like to burn 500kcal or more in a session, not sure if that's 'intense' for you or not.

    Amazing

You're lucky that you've got a spouse that does what they're told. It's so lovely that he trusted you and went along with it, I must admit to feeling a little emotional when I read posts like yours. My wife joined me on the LHCF journey out of solidarity and to help support me by not having...

    Shin Splints / Achilles Tendonitis

I can't believe I've been so stupid. Stayed in a hotel last week and was quite bored, so ran 5k in the evening, then the morning at their gym and then in the evening walked 4 miles back to the station with 20kg backpack. Now I seem to have shin splints in right leg and Achilles tendon/heel pain...

    Type 2 Stopping Medication

I'd take some more Metformin, 5s over 6s & 7s sound good to me. It works by affecting your liver's production of glucose, so will lower your fasting and night time levels - and reduce the background level of blood glucose, allowing you to eat a few more carbs without it getting too high. It...

BBC1 Wales - Fat v Carbs with Jamie Owen

That's more of a character assassination piece than an analysis of the study. There is only a little metabolic difference, and I, for one, agree that the appetite surpressing effects are far more influential.

BBC1 Wales - Fat v Carbs with Jamie Owen

No, not all at - you very likely eat fewer calories without counting. I am extremely dubious about several different hypotheses about LCHF/Ketogenic - I don't go for the various metabolic arguments about energy burning etc. I think everything can be adequatedly explained by the appetite control...

BBC1 Wales - Fat v Carbs with Jamie Owen

There's an, admittedly very nerdy joke about three professors on a train to Scotland, when they pass a brown cow - the professor of economics says "Oh look, cows in Scotland are brown' - the professor of mathematics corrects him "Well, there are cows in Scotland, and at least one is brown' - the...

BBC1 Wales - Fat v Carbs with Jamie Owen

In my opinion, like the NHS's advice, it's outdated and based on low-quality evidence. There is reasonable evidence that for some people LCHF works - But then similar evidence exists for the traditional low-cal diet, I don't think there's a definitive study across the whole population that...

BBC1 Wales - Fat v Carbs with Jamie Owen

Yeah, we're, on the whole not treating this as a strictly controlled experiment - For myself, as well as cutting down dramatically on carbs, I've also taken on board advice about omegas and trans-fats, so don't eat margarine at all or processed food much, eating more vegetables and exercising...
