    need some advice on food

Sandy, those are serious numbers. Get yourself to a better GP, or your local A&E as soon as. Then cut out the breads, pastas, potatoes, rice and sugar from your diet. Don't hang about. fergus

    views on diet

While you can eat carbs and burn glucose to fuel your running, you don't have to. When I run or cycle first thing in the morning, it's always after a zero-carb breakfast. fergus

    evening snacks

I thought it might be worth posting a comment from one of the mainstream sources themselves. Ronald Krauss, one of the USA's foremost researchers into heart disease and nutrition and who once chaired the AHA's nutrition committee. In my own experience, he's quite correct. On a diet low in...

    evening snacks

Hi Eric, if I can pitch in, there are a few unarguable principles that you need to remember when you think about these issues. The first is that you cannot gain weight without insulin. Further, the more insulin in your system, the greater the weight gain. Carbohydrates have a high demand for...

    Type 1 & Gym

Hi Tony, T1 diagnosis is a bummer to say the least, but it sounds like you're grabbing the bull by the horns. Good on ya. Weight and cardio are a great idea and will benefit you in lots of ways. My advice would be that a blood sugar of 9 is too high at any time. If you start intensive exercise...

Macadamias, cheese, olives, pickled egg, deli meat, small tin of pilchards, mackerel, celery sticks & mayo? Not all at the same time perhaps  fergus

    blood cholesterol

That's not bad broads. Anything below 1.7 is considered pretty normal and the lower the better. The fewer refined carbs you eat, the lower it's likely to go. Your doctor may have your HDL figure and this time, the higher the better. All the best, fergus

    Help!!!

Sorry miko, but this is quite wrong. Not only is there no minimum safe level of carb intake, carbs are not essential for physical energy either. The body doesn't particularly care where its calories come from and can function very efficiently on fat and protein alone. I'd be interested in where...

    Great First Week

Ketosis is perfectly safe TMB. It's a normal metabolic state when you are burning fat for fuel. Anyone who suggests it's unsafe is confusing it with diabetic ketoacidosis. That is unsafe but is a condition where blood sugar levels are high and insulin levels very low so has nothing to do with a...

Please explain low carb to newbee...

Hi Ursula and welcome to the Dark Side! :D Without wishing to provoke an argument, the simple answer is that you don't need carbhydrates with a meal. We all eat them to varying degrees to get a variety of nutrients, but these can all be derived from foods other than carbohydrates if necessary...

    blood cholesterol

The 5.1 result is hard to comment on because it means very little without a measurement of the constituent parts - LDL, HDL, VLDL, triglycerides. Depending on those numbers, 5.1 could be good, bad or indifferent. Do you have those figures? All the best, fergus

    Newbee...........and need help with breakfast!

Hi Ursula, and thanks a million for your kind words! Quite the opposite Ursula! You've just made one of the most intelligent decisions you ever could. Smarter than the avarage bear, I'd say. Be careful with the insulin if you go for eggs and bacon tomorrow - you will need much less...

    Newbee...........and need help with breakfast!

Hi Ursula, For me it's gotta be eggs. Either with bacon, salmon, mushrooms or in a cheese omlette. Fab. I've been type 1 for 27 years and used to eat toast and cereals for breakfast every day. The result was a blood sugar toboggan ride so it made no sense to carry on with that. Having replaced...

air bubble in my flexpen ??

To expel the air bubble, prime the pen with the needle pointing upwards. It may take 2 or 3 attempts to clear the air, but it will work. The real problem with air in the cartridge is that it effectively reduces the pressure needed to deliver a full dose and the result can often mean the pen...

Hi Everyone, I am new here, please help me

Hi Sandy, Those numbers are certainly a bit on the high side, but not as bad as they could have been. We haven't got onto the subject of diet yet, but I'd suggest completely cutting out all sugars and refined grains and starches to see how your blood glucose responds. Avoid the bread, pasta...

    Lower carb. question

I think baby steps are the way forward when you have insulin injections to deal with. Where you know you are eating less carbohydrate - scrambled eggs instead of muesli for example - you can reduce your insulin to suit. Then test afterwards to see how your blood sugars respond. Gradually you can...
