I don't get that. The blood sugar measurements, lab or glucometer, measure the concentration of glucose in the blood, don't they? It's the high glucose levels that do the damage as well as high insulin levels which would be the case when glucose metabolism is impaired. There are also lots of...

starting newcastle diet on 2nd jan

Sensible approach. It's a shame that there isn't a follow up plan because that's probably harder to do than the diet itself, with all these folk getting on and off wagons, or whatever they do. I'm sure you'll do OK because you're planning ahead and thinking long term. And you've got the meter to...

Man who reversed his diabetes in 11 days

It was the Newcastle Diet, and the definition of "reversal" is fasting levels of <6.0 and hba1c of <6.0 without medication, and not permanently normoglycaemic ie eating whatever you like and never going above normal blood sugar levels. The long term success of the diet depends on significant...

    Apples

Charon, I would guess that you have depleted your glycogen stores and that your body is breaking down body fats and protein/fat from the diet to maintain a functioning and constant blood glucose level in the absence or deficit of dietary carbohydrate. That may well be the reason why your...

    Apples

I'm confused! I read one of the earlier Newcastle studies that a protein snack 2 hours before breakfast reduced pst prandial BGs. It was 75g yogurt and 30g soya beans. Hardly appetising, is it? Another study in Japan showed that eating vegetables first and then the rest of the meal...

    Apples

That's the thing about testing, it becomes compulsive. I'm only just brave enough to test one hour after a meal and of course the number is going to be higher than at 2 hours, so you need to brace yourself and expect to see higher numbers. It can be a bit of an emotional roller coaster too...

    Apples

Charon, an apple can contain 15-20g sugar depending on size, variety, ripeness etc. I know Braeburns aren't that sweet but if you consider that a teaspoon of sugar is 5g you could have ingested the equivalent of 5-6 teaspoons of sugar. OK…not the same thing because there's fibre and so on, but...

A Burden on the NHS - Type 2's

Saloplass, I'm so sorry to hear of your experience. Unfortunately diagnosis comes too late. I am pre-d but I've been fobbed off by three doctors at my surgery who tell me I have nothing to worry about, even though I spike into diabetic levels after normal potions of healthy meals. The hba1c...

    Thin people. Type 2.

The subject of weight loss comes up a lot on this forum. There are many people who have lost weight, are in the process of deliberately trying to lose weight, or have been advised by their health care professionals to lose weight on diagnosis. Some people have a very strong family history, for...

Its Newcastle Jim, but not as we know it...

I'm sure his diagnosis was sound as it required more than one snapshot fasting test to confirm it. I also note that he increased his exercise as well as losing weight. It all depends what one's trigger factors are. For some it is weight gain, for others it is inactivity. Maybe stress played a...

    Where is the obesity epidemic?

Depends where you live. I live in an urban area with a large percentage of people with chronic ill health and I'm seeing more people who aren't just overweight but huge. It's a lot more common to see people who are very large now compared to when I was a kid. In the more "health conscious" shire...

    A REAL Cure for Diabetes

    A REAL Cure for Diabetes

I'm not diagnosed with anything yet, but I have impaired glucose tolerance ie higher than usual post prandial readings. There isn't a Prediabetes option on the profile settings so i dont put anything. I think this has been going on for some time so I am disinclined to think LADA, but I don't...

    Do you believe your readings?

I have a Bayer Contour Next USB and the SD Codefree and I have to say that the Codefree has been fairly consistent with the readings from the Contour, although it can sometimes give an erratic reading (as can all meters). The Codefree is certainly good enough for observing trends and working out...
