    DIY oral glucose tolerance test?

Does anyone have any suggestions as to doing an OGTT at home with a finger prick meter? I'd quite like to see what effect my low carbing and medication is having on my glucose tolerance, to see if my insulin sensitivity is improving, and I thought I could maybe try making a graph of my response...

a kind of warning of diet drinking

Actually careful with the herbal teas - surprisingly some of those can be very acidic too!

    Success!

Got my first hba1c results back today after my initial diagnosis 3 months ago. It's down from 92 to 41! Seems like the odd slip up from the low carbing has not had too detrimental an effect!

    I sort of snapped yesterday...

I've been incredibly consistent on the low carb diet for over a month now (having had a couple of months previously of wavering a bit) but yesterday I snapped completely and ate a lot of everything I definitely cannot eat - chips, 4 krispy kreme doughnuts, a fishcake, almond croissant...

    Worried about husband

Could be sleep apnoea perhaps? That can make you tired during the day, and sweat a lot too during the night. It can affect blood sugar too. Does he have difficulty breathing or sometimes stop breathing during the night?

I think I may be a type 2 diabetic but

Just get your blood sugar tested and find out whether you have it. Literally no point in worrying about anything until then. Go and find out if you have it first.

Type 2s: What was your fasting blood glucose in a morning? (very low chat level)

5.7 - definitely heading in the right direction again!

    Anyone tried Actos? Experiences?

    Insulin Resistance

Yes actually it's suggested as the second line drug therapy to use by NICE is metformin alone is not enough or not tolerated! Which has made me wonder if the risks are not quite as bad as the headlines suggest.

    Insulin Resistance

There's a drug called Actos too which resensitises cells to insulin - as far as I can find it's the only drug aside from metformin that attempts to treat the underlying condition. I did post last week asking if others had had any experience of it yet but as yet no replies. It does has some...

What was your fasting blood glucose? (with some chat)

6.1 - not too bad but I've seen much better!

Do you have detials of the diet you fed you cat? I'd be interested for my own moggie actually!

    Anyone tried Actos? Experiences?

At my first 3 month review with my GP, which was generally very positive, I asked him a lot about insulin resistance and he discussed metformin (which I'm already on) and suggested I might want to try Actos, too, depending on the results on my latest hba1c test. Apparently Actos can help...

    Type 2 Diabetes and Cancer

I think the cancer link is less to do with sugar and more to do with high insulin. Insulin is a growth hormone, and an associated hormone that definitely has a role in cancer is IGF1, which apparently is typically elevated when insulin is elevated. In type 2 diabetics insulin is chronically...

    BS gone up?

I've been low car Oh! Yes actually! That must explain it. I didn't realise there would be variation between different pots. Who knew!

    BS gone up?

The past couple of weeks I've been fairly consistent in my diet, and actually have been to the gym twice this week, but my blood sugar actually seems to have increased a bit on average... I was previously getting around 5.2 - 5.7 in the morning but now it's consistently over 6, and in fact the...

Nice experience with the GP today

You see many people here mention that their GP is reluctant to prescribe them test strips - I had an appointment today specifically to ask for strips. I had armed myself with all of the arguments for testing prior to going into his office, but as soon as I asked him he said, "yes, of course, how...

Not all HBa1c's are the same !

There are a couple of drugs that help to improve insulin sensitivity, metformin and Actos (pioglitazone). But yes, I agree that it's strange that the insulin resistance isn't generally more addressed by the medical profession.

    Metformin...worth taking or not?

Metformin is a really good drug to be on if you can tolerate the side effects. One thing that perhaps doesn't get mentioned on here so often is that having type 2 can put you at a seriously increased risk for cancer, and the metformin can help to mitigate that risk quite a bit.

Why isn't hyperinsulinemia talked about more

Actually I've been reading about this and it sounds like Actos might possibly be a drug based solution? Although obviously it has potentially awful side effects in some people. But it's referenced here and there online as being a drug that can significantly improve insulin resistance and also...
