Why isn't hyperinsulinemia talked about more

Someone linked me this article on another thread that has got me thinking a lot about a less discussed cause of a myriad of problems, which is chronic high insulin levels in type 2s. http://insulinresistance.org/index.php/jir/article/view/18/25 You barely see it mentioned here and I wonder...

    A1C reduction - realistic outlook

Although everyone's talking a lot about blood sugar levels, it seems insulin levels come into play a lot too as high insulin levels can also be very damaging in the long term! In type 2 diabetics this seems to be a significant issue because we tend to have very high insulin levels in our blood...

    Boils/abscesses? Diabetes related? Help!

Here is a really interesting read about HS: http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S1521693414001369 It's long, but worth reading the whole thing. I've had it fairly mildly under my arms for a few years, and in the past couple of months that I've had lower blood sugar it seems to have...

    Good surprise after pizza

I had an interesting experience with pizza. I was 5.9 just before, then actually dropped to 5.2 about 45 mins later, which was a surprise. But 2 hours later I was up to 7.3, and probably went higher later - unfortunately I'd just run out of test strips after the 2 hour reading so don't know for...

Why cant I lower blood sugar

Someone else has pointed out that type 2 diabetics are usually insulin resistant. When I was diagnosed, I did ask my GP why I shouldn't just go straight onto insulin. He said that at diagnosis a type 2 might typically have as much as 10x more insulin in their blood than someone without diabetes...

Stress and Blood Glucose Levels - Thoughts?

This thread has been an interesting read. Before I was diagnosed in February of this year, I had a period of about 2 months of unrelenting acute stress that was so bad that I found myself regularly locking myself in the bathroom to cry for an hour or two, barely managing to sleep at night...

    What causes complications?

What actually causes diabetic complications (foot problems, retinopathy etc)? I had been under the impression that uncontrolled high blood sugar was the cause but have just read an article in the Guardian about a young man (early 30s) who recently lost his big toe due to an ulcer, despite...

Does low carbing improve insulin sensitivity?

I'm curious if anyone knows following a strict low carb diet over a long period can improve insulin sensitivity. Since this seems like a very popular method of controlling blood sugar it made me wonder exactly what's going on with this diet - does your blood sugar improve only because there's...

How did you know or find out you are type 2

I tripped in the street and dislocated my shoulder, in thh ambulance on the way to the hospital the paramedic tested my blood sugar (still not sure why actually, I guess it was just a hunch) and it was really high! Went for tests at GP a bit later and was formally diagnosed then. Bit of a fluke...

Most people with type 2 diabetes will also eventually need to use insulin.

Hey, welcome to the forums. I'm a similar age - 31 - and just got diagnosed a few weeks ago. I always thought it was a progressive condition and my GP also said so, but he also told me this was actually a great time to be diagnosed because there is so much more being discovered about the disease...

    Weekly weigh in - Fridays

Blimey, reading through the posts everyone sounds so thin! About 27 stone here currently... that said I was just a hair under 30 last year.

    A pleasant surprise

It's probably a regular latte (which is a shot of espresso with steamed semi skimmed milk) with sugar free vanilla syrup. How many carbs in a cup of milk? 10g or so?

What was your fasting blood glucose? (with some chat)

Frustratingly it was 6.4 this morning. Most mornings I've been getting 5.4 - 5.7 so I'm not quite sure why it's gone up. Yesterday was very low carb, about 30g (unless I missed something obvious) and I had a good session at the gym. Oh well. Hopefully tomorrow it'll be better!

    Depression/diabetes

Has anyone else had their depression more or less spontaneously resolve after getting blood sugar back to roughly normal levels? About 2 1/2 years ago I was diagnosed with fairly severe and crippling depression, specifically very low energy, fatigue, difficulty concentrating, constant tiredness...

    Does Metformin cause kidney damage?

A friend has told me that taking metformin in the long term (>15 years) can cause permanent kidney damage. I've been googling but found not much information except that people with pre-existing kidney problems can't have metformin. But nothing obvious has come up. Has anyone read anything about...

    Dodgy advice from GP

When I was given my diagnosis at the end of February, my GP did briefly mention diet changes as a possible route, but told me these don't really work and that my only real option was to go straight for weight loss surgery. At the time I didn't know about diabetes.co.uk and knew hardly anything...

Advised to reuse lances? Is that right?

At a recent appointment with my diabetic nurse I succeeded in being prescribed a meter and strips, but when I asked about lances I was told there were plenty in the box with the meter and I could just reuse them anyway. Is that really right? My instinct is to use once and replace to maintain...

Is it ok to cheat sometimes?

I want to keep all parts attached too! I'm new to this and I'm still not sure how black and white or not the rules are. It's doubly confusing because on some other diabetes websites you see the official advice saying that it's ok to eat pasta, for example. I've had pasta exactly once since I was...
