    Background retinopathy.

Thank you for the link you posted, noblehead. I used to have background retinopathy but was a very heavy smoker. Twenty five years ago I quit smoking and for the last ten years have had no retinopathy. Thought this was solely due to good blood sugar control, much aided by an insulin pump but...

    Background retinopathy.

Was it the same person who tested you on both occasions and did the last tester know you were diabetic? In my experience some people, when they know you are diabetic, will find traces of retinopathy because they think they should. Congratulations... With an HbA1c reading of 5.8% you have...

    Who tests regularly for ketones?

My wife had a Yorkie that would yap incessantly if I was hypo. Don't know what the dog sensed.

    Who tests regularly for ketones?

I can smell ketones on my own breath if I hold the palm of my hand in front of my mouth. Used to get them sometimes in the days before DIY blood tests were available.

    Question about treating hypos

:)Mini Coca-Cola 65kcal and mini Mars bar 80kcal will quickly bring me round from a low of 30 (or just under 2 in the U.K.). Absolutely hate becoming unconscious because professionals will always stuff you full of glucose to stop you being a pest.

    mg/dL or mmol/L

When I moved to France in 2000 I found that they didn't use beef insulin and they measured blood sugar in milligrams. Converting to modern insulin was relatively easy and adopting mg/dL was even better. 100 mg/dL is 5.6 mmol/L, so if your test says 100 mg your blood sugar is 100% OK. If it's 50...

    hospital food

It's just as bad here in France in our local hospital, where the food for poor T2s is absolutely dire. I'm T1 but nothing will persuade them that I have to eat normally. The only way to get an adequate supply of calories is to guzzle red Coca-Cola from the vending machine.

Why does insurance prioritize the pump over CGM?

Finger pricking blood tests will become more comfortable over a period of time. For more than tweny years I've tested at least ten times a day and now I scarcely notice it. I seldom change the lancets either but new ones do seem to be kinder on the skin. I've been pumping for eight years and...

    Explaining type 1

:grumpy:If I have to stay in hospital for a reason not related to diabetes they always want to feed me a dire 'diabetic' diet. Please let me eat normally and I'll manage my blood sugar.

    Insulin pump and sleeping

Medtronic make a belt with a pouch and a velcro fastening specially to wear at night. Have used one of these for the past six years without a single bad incident. Tom

Are you hitting the 3 main diabetes targets?

I get the BP and the HBa1C scores fine, but my C levels are hovering around the 5 mark. My DN and GP don't seem too worried though! As above. My C is 5.76 mmol/l. Is mmol/l the value normally used in the UK or is it g/l? :D If it's g/l (which is normally used here in France)then mine's 2.23. Tom

    What caused it???

I was diagnosed T1 in May 1964 at the age of 25. As a New Year resolution I had given up smoking and ate a large quantity of sweets for five months to compensate. On the other hand my grandmother died of T1 in 1905 so maybe I was predestined or perhaps it was a combination of the two. Tom

    New record low???

Sorry if this is topic drift but what do you do when your bg is super low? Red coca-cola is my favorite because you can't get lucozade in France and had to find an alternative (juice is too slow, like duranie found). Always have mini cans of coke handy when travelling and now prefer it to...

    New record low???

T1 fifty years. Like LauraJay I've been down to 1.2 (= 22 mg/dL here in France) a few times whilst remaining conscious. Try to keep the lowest possible HbA1c but sometimes overdo it! Tom

    Positives of having Diabetes

Male, born 1939. T1 since 1964. Well controlled with pump (av 5.7% last year). No complications. Diabetes taught me self-discipline. Was completely irresponsible in my teens and early twenties. Rebelled against my diabetes at the start but fairly soon learnt that this was the road to physical...

    Have you reversed diabetic complications?

Yes. I have been a T1 since 1964. Like uttersO my control was not good initially and in the seventies and eighties I developed retina 'microdots', although they were never very severe. A year ago my ophthalmist said he could see no microdots ( :D I was tempted to ask if he should go to...
