    Low Carb Alternatives

I really like cauliflower mash but I LOVE broccoli mash. Cook frozen broccoli until it’s soft. Drain well. Add lump of butter, salt and pepper and blitz with stick blender (or otherwise mash it). Delicious! From a Nigella Lawson recipe! I don’t see much mention of Konjac rice and noodles on this...

    Best cook books

Annie Bell Low Carb Revolution Sarah Flowers Eating to Beat Type 2 Diabetes Kate Caldesi Diabetes books More recent Jamie Oliver books have carb counts for recipes and I also find the Hairy Dieters books to be great healthy recipes although they do contain carbs. I just leave them out (eg...

Covid vaccine halted in other countries

According to the news this morning out of 17,000,000 people who have had the Oxford vaccine, 40 have subsequently had blood clots. This is 0.00024%. I’m happy with those odds even if the clots can all be related to the Oxford vaccine, which I’ve had.

Covid vaccine halted in other countries

I am not a scientist but from what I have read, this vaccine has been developed so quickly because a huge amount of work had already been done on developing a vaccine for a SARS like virus after the last SARS outbreak, which is what Coronavirus is. Forgive me if I’ve misunderstood. Secondly...

Type 2 How many grams of carbs a day?

Hi. When I was diagnosed in September 2017, I weighed about 12.5 stone. I’m not sure what my Hba1c was. I immediately went on Metformin and a low carb diet of a maximum of 130 g of carbs a day. Controversially I also kept an eye on calories. I lost 3 stone over the next 9 months and my Hba1c...

    Cake Recipes

Gosh where shall I start!? There are lots of keto cake recipes as TeddyTotty says. However you can transform most ‘normal’ cake recipes to diabetic friendly. If using almond flour, REDUCE amount of butter in the recipe by 25% and amount of flour by 10%. Use the same amount of erythritol as the...

    LCHF

Diet Doctor is fine and there are other good sites too but what I often do is put whatever I want to make preceded by Keto in the search engine. Eg keto gingerbread. I’ve found some great low carb recipes this way. Good cookbooks are: Low Carb Revolution Annie Bell Books by Kate Caldesi. Hairy...

Diabetics added to the shielding list as of today

Hi all The prevalence of COVID 19 is very worrying for most people, including me, and particularly for those with an underlying health condition and if you feel safer shielding than do it. But you’re unlikely to be designated officially as someone who should shield unless you meet certain...

Has anyone got anything positive to say about Metformin?

I’ve said this before and had absolutely no feedback or indeed response from anyone, for or against. But I’ll recommend this again My brother who was diagnosed years before me recommended taking a probiotic of some sort when I started on Metformin. I took Multibionta and I had no problems...

    Resistant starch

I very, very rarely eat rice or pasta anymore and I don’t miss them at all. However I would miss potatoes and toast (not bothered about bread itself). So I also read this when I was diagnosed in 2017 and I cook one new potato, cut in half so it looks like two, cool it and then either roast or...

    Hairy Bikers cook book

I was very disappointed I the Hairy Bikers Cook book. I’ve really enjoyed their Hairy Dieters books and have made several reasonably low carb meals from them. Book 3 is especially good although you may have to make the odd substitute. Saying that, I ve never had a large increase in blood sugar...

    Gp rang

I took Tamoxifen for 5 years following treatment for breast cancer and put on 3 stone in weight. Convinced this triggered strong family linked type 2 diabetes. My mum and brother both bigger than me developed it much younger than I did. I was always slim before. Took off weight with low carb...

Govt Report (draft) on efficacy of low carb diets

Rushed my response. Quite agree with you Antje77. Should have said ‘restrict’ not ‘avoid’ and by restrict I mean to a level that works for you. I’m in Metformin and I keep to less than 130g a day and this works for me but may not for other people.

Govt Report (draft) on efficacy of low carb diets

My thinking on this could possibly be described as naive but, put simply: diabetics should avoid sugar in their system, all carbohydrates turn to sugar in your system, ergo avoid carbohydrates. Can’t see how you can disagree with this as the basis of a diabetic system of eating.

Type 2 New to taking metformin

I’ve written this before but have had absolutely no response either way. I’ll try again. My brother, a long standing type 2, recommended I took a high quality pro biotic tablet when I started Metformin as recommended to him when he started taking it. We both found it warded off stomach problems...

Type 2 needing to convince others I really am diabetic!

I’m with you Mr Pot. What does it matter if she doesn’t believe you’re diabetic? Assuming you get on well in other ways, just turn down her offers of unsuitable food with a smile and no explanation and keep up your good work. My otherwise lovely mother in law believes I’m diabetic but still...

Metaformin side affects this really sucks

My brother recommended taking Vitamin tablets with a high amount of probiotics which had worked to get rid of his side effects when he went on Metformin. I took these When I was prescribed the medication and had no problems. Coincidence? Maybe but worth a try!

    Frozen Shoulder

I have had two frozen shoulders, many years apart. I found both times that a regular shoulder massage helped a great deal with the pain although not with mobility, which eventually sorted itself out. Unfortunately you can only get 6 sessions on the nhs and it can get a bit expensive. But worth...

    Hairy Bikers New Cook Book

I was soooo disappointed. I like the Hairy Dieters but this book is based around low fat and low calorie. There’s a pretty dismissive mention of low carb and that’s it. Bit old fashioned really. I really like Sarah Flowers sugar free books in which she gives low carb options. Justine Pattison’s...
