    Pasta

I was the same, loved pasta in all forms and this was a real staple of my diet before diagnosis. Dreamfields pasta is very good and tastes almost exactly the same as the rest but much lower in carbs. I only eat it occasionally though because since low carbing I have lost the urge to eat pasta...

    Evaluation of glucometers

I have a one-touch ultra and haven't had any problems with it. I always recalibrate when using a new pot of test strips with a different number. There have been only a very few occasions when I have had an eyebrow raising unexpected result and when I test again immediately, the result is as...

    Need a boost

Hi Hanna, Sorry you are feeling down. Stage 3 is moderate impairment. Perhaps wiflib is correct, and this won't progress any further because of your exellent bg control. You truly are an example to us all. I enjoy your posts and especially your low carb recipes. I am glad you have a good...

    It's snowing!!

Hi Sue, I can see some clouds building that look mighty like snow to me. I live in a small village outside of Edinburgh and remember we were cut off about eight years ago for a couple of days. It is not a good sign to get snow this early in the season. I Wonder if we will get a white Xmas...

Overdoing the sugar after a hypo

I used to love scottish tablet before I was diagnosed. I admire anyone with the self control to eat only one piece. Even the smell of it makes me salivate (the kids still eat it!). For me the only way to treat a hypo is dextrose tabs as they taste rubbish and so there is no temptation for me...

    Type 1 Genetic Implications

Hello Hana, Thank you for the information. My oldest child was born before I was 25 but my two others were born when I was in my thirties. I also didn't get diabetes until I was 45 so fingers crossed for the kids! Caitycakes x

    Type 1 Genetic Implications

Hi all, When I was first diagnosed, I asked my DSN if there was an increased chance of any of my children "inheriting" my Type 1 diabetes. The answer I got was that the chance of it was so low that it was nothing to worry about. Now that my head has uncorked itself from my bahookie and I am...

    Stirfrys

Hi, I marintate the meat I use in a little sesame oil and salt-reduced soy sauce. I have this with spring onion, mushrooms, bean sprouts, bamboo shoots and garlic. A very tasty, filling, low carb meal, ready in minutes. Another one I like is a stir fry of broccoli, cauli, mushrooms, spring...

Overdoing the sugar after a hypo

If you are type 1 you MUST take slow acting carbs after hypo correction unless you are due to eat a meal otherwise you most certainly will come crashing down again. Caitycakes x

    Carbs to Insulin !!

Hi Sofaraway, I am subscribing to the low carb school of thought and it seems to be going great, I must admit, I like the idea of a more flexible regime, but if I am honest, the reason I haven't insisted on basal/bolus, is that I'm not 100% certain of my willpower (i.e much more flexible eating...

    Carbs to Insulin !!

Sofaraway, I am on 5 1/2 TDD but it's premix. I have a half unit pen but wondered about basal/bolus due to small amounts used and also DSN saying it would be difficult. Sarah, Thanks, I will see if Katherine has any advice for me. Caitycakes x

carbs low, - weight rising. Help

Aaaaah now I see! Know what you mean about not putting things in the bin, but I was soooooo good today. I cut the kids a slice of gorgeous, moist, toffee cake and refrained from licking the knife. ****, I can't find a smilie with a halo on top lol. Caitycakes x

Hi Sarah, So do you think it's entirely possible to change to basal/bolus on my tiny amounts without too much hassle? Caitycakes x

Type 1 - Lots of hypos

Hi Acron^, I keep dextrose tablets and digestive biccies on my bedside table at night. That way you can treat the hypo without even getting out of bed! No staggering down dangerous stairs in the dark or burning oneself on the toaster! Seriously though, you should really try to avoid stairs...

    Carbs to Insulin !!

Not at all Sarah. I definitely want to go on to basal/bolus at some point and was using the 500 rule to try to understand why my DSN thinks basal/bolus transition might be tricky given that I am still honeymooning (and low carbing) and on tiny doses. Caitycakes x

Metformin has no effect - advice please

Hi, I am 45 type 1 diagnosed 3 months ago. My doctor didn't diagnose it, it was my bloomin optician. I ended up having to go to hospital to get sorted out. Can you not skip the docs and take yourself off to casualty. If you give them the symptoms and BG levels I'm sure they wouldn't turn...
