Type 2 Can Retinopathy be stopped with proper blood sugar control?

@Lee83 At my first eye check I had background retinopathy. By the following year it had gone. No medication after the first month or so as it made me really ill, but I eat low carb and all is well.

Newly diagnosed preparing for first appointment with DN

@BettyBoo333 We have followed the same path - all as directed by NHS professionals. I stick to under 40 gm of carbs a day to keep my numbers normal and stop weightgain. A few months after diagnosis I did lose a fair bit of weight once I got down to under 8 after meals - the numbers kept reducing...

French toast with low carb bread?

Oh - I was puzzled at first - you mean pain perdu, I think - maybe increase the egg and slice the bread very thin to push it from high carb - and no sugar of course. The local polish grocery shop has a protein bread that is very dark and very solid but quite low carb - also quite expensive. I...

    Long term low carb diet

I found that eating at around 12 hourly intervals, and having some carbs at breakfast in order to stop my glucose levels continuing to rise after getting out of bed. I keep to a very low carb diet in order to have a fairly normal HbA1c and mostly under 8mmol/l glucose levels. To do that I eat a...

Cholesterol level rose on low carb diet

@LionChild my cholesterol goes up a little when I lose weight, then reduces down again - which is logical as cholesterol has uses around the body which increase when fat is mobilised from cells to the liver.

    Overactive Bladder

I find I need to be careful with some diet drinks - It might be the type of artificial sweetener as it is not every brand. The effect lasts a day or so, then just as I have been getting worried, it goes away - once I am back to drinking tea and coffee.

    Metformin

I had that when on Atorvastatin and Metformin - was using two sticks in just a few weeks - I can't say if it was one or the other as I started and stopped both tablets on the same day. It was 18 months before the final ache subsided, and probably 3 years before I was strong enough to carry a...

    Insulin and digestion time

Is there any chance you could be dehydrated? It would have to be quite severe lack of water, but some of the symptoms you describe do match up.

7 month old is on the bigger side!

Not type 1 but have always had problems dealing with carbs, all my adult life. My son was over 9 lb born, in the top 95 percentile and always the tallest in his class. He is over 6 ft tall and a stay at home dad to six kids. My second pregnancy did not go well as I was pressured into a...

    Thoughts on new diagnosis

@Mousey123 If you want chocolate (rather than sugar) then a high cocoa content bar is the way to go, rather than tiny amounts of the ordinary stuff. If you want things which are quite carby feeling then make something like swede based bubble and squeak or a cauliflower cheese bake, or a pudding...

Non-diabetics telling me how easy it is!

Wow - (it is no wonder I get into trouble rather a lot) now would that be 6 or 7 meals a day? I mean - honestly? As a type 2 on no medication for it, I try to eat twice a day, but my routine got disrupted and now I struggle to eat a snack and a meal - usually 30 to 35gm of carbs a day. I seems...

    Taurine

I don't really see how that would work - most people have enough taurine to cover the requirement for it - unless they are avoiding dairy and animal products very carefully. Some taurine is created in the body, it can help in repairing nerve damage - and where heart failure is happening due to...

    Feel incredibly guilty

I have had cellulitis several times, so these days I put an antiseptic cream on my feet before and after cutting my nails - even though I am really careful about it and never see any damage, since I started to do that I have not had any bother. The first incident was after the AZ covid jab -...

    Change of Meds, increase BS.

@ChrisT2 I find it almost bewildering that people will see improvements in just about all aspects of our lives, but then disparage the way they were achieved because it goes against accepted belief and 'wisdom'. I got a full on 'come in to discus medication to manage your cholesterol and type...

    Motivation

Like Rachox I witnessed the effects of uncontrolled diabetes - living with my grandmother in her final years. That was dreadful, and I suspect it could have been avoided which makes it worse. Do allow yourself to be diabetic - make plans for your safety and comfort, buy things you can eat, make...

    menus

@ambercoco1 you can eat any protein - no restrictions, though including fats which come with them is a good thing, rather than including less natural sources. The helpful foods , though, are the most expensive elements of any meal, and for any business producing readymeals there is always the...

    Low carb meal plan

I had the same advice - after struggling for 50 years I was still being berated for becoming vastly overweight with a huge waistline - almost spherical. Following what had always made me feel so much better - pretty much the Atkins diet, 50 gm of carbs a day max, I was just about back to normal...

    Socks! Recommendations (for UK shopping)?

@JenniferW Have you thought of knitting your own? I started making a lot of my own clothes way back in the 1960s and have probably had a sock in progress ever since - they are so much more comfortable than anything I have ever bought - I tend to make rather flashy ones - I was, after all, a...

    Just unable to cope anymore

We just had to deal with rats - we poisoned them ourselves, but there are numerous businesses which will do the job for you. It probably feels far more dreadful than it is - if they are not in the house, just in the cavity then there is no danger of contaminated food. We found a broken drainpipe...

    Low carb meal plan

You could look for Dr Atkins New Diet Revolution - the last edition is 2003 I think, and they used to cost mere pennies. There are lists of foods, meals with various amounts of carbs - the only downside is that it is American in origin and so there are foods we don't get over here in the UK.
