Low Carb T1 - how low to count protein

The amino acids in protein only get converted to glucose if you eat more protein than you need to satisfy protein your amino acid requirements. If you eat less than a gram of protein per Kg of body weight each day, you don't need to to bolus for protein. All the amino acids are used for body...

    Alcohol and type 1 diabetes?

If you have had alcohol and are concerned about going low after going to bed, a snack with no insulin should help prevent this. You need to figure what type of snack works best. Slow acting carbs, like fruit or chocolate give cover for a longer period. Eating something carby with fat, like...

    Alcohol and type 1 diabetes?

Because alcohol is detoxified in the liver, t is not able to supply required glucose. This can cause a hypo, especially after going to bed. Eating something before bed limits the effect, which is different for different people. You just have to test it in a controlled way and establish how your...

    Sugars rising in evening

Sounds like you are running out of basal action in the afternoon. I would first test basal to confirm this, by skipping lunch and then supper on different days. If blood glucose continues to rise after these skipped meals, increasing the morning Lantus dose should help. If it causes lows in the...

    Insulin allergy - multiple insulins

Have you considered using a pump? Gradual infusion may be less likely to trigger an allergic reaction. Worth trying. Another option is to switch to Regular and NPH. They are pre-analogue insulins and may not contain the ingredient you are allergic to. You could also try the even older animal...

    Honeymoon period

Bear in mind that what happens to blood glucose is the net effect of various factors. Yes, Dawn Phenomenon increases closer to dawn. But Lantus insulin action may be fading at the same time too. And there are probably various other factors, like state of health and stress & exercise during the...

    Honeymoon period

You must be making most of your own insulin, which is what the honeymoon is. The term 'honeymoon' is a bit misleading because you don't know about it until it is over. Warmer weather reduces insulin requirement, which is probably why you are noticing it more now. Your doctor thinks a fully...

    Overnight Hypo

It The extra exercise may have aggravated the situation, but looks to me like your pancreas decided to make some insulin too. Not unusual for people diagnosed as adults. Happened a lot to me, but not anymore. Been T1 for 43 years now, so no residual insulin production.

    Type 1 and weight loss

How much insulin do you use? If insulin sensitivity is an issue, exercise will help. The amount of insulin required for stable glucose declines, making weight loss easier.

How Low is Too Low on Extended Fast?

Low blood glucose is a concern if there is excess insulin action driving it down. As you are not using insulin, IMO low blood glucose should only be a concern if you are not feeling well. The liver will supply enough glucose to keep you going until you end the fast..

    T1 tech

Do you really think so? Dealing with T1 is different now to what it was when it started for me 43 years ago. But it isn't any easier, in spite of better insulin and technology. If anything dealing with T1 gets increasingly difficult as daily life becomes more stressful and hectic. I have come...

    T1 tech

Why would technology make a difference to the consequences of passing n a genetic weakness? CGMs and pumps help with treatment but they don't affect the prognosis of a young person with T1.

    Novarapid vs Humalog

I would call that 'moderate carb'. If it works for you, great, but going lower would further stabilise blood glucose.. 'Low carb' is defined in different ways but is often understood as the level of carb that retrains the body to switch from glucose to fat as the main source of energy. Doing...

How many high reading do you get?

Yes, low carb diets definitely helps. Your numbers are very stable. Do you use a pump?

    Novarapid vs Humalog

I have used both and I could see no difference. For me the time to peak and duration of insulin action were pretty much the same. If you want something faster, ask for Fiasp or Lyumjev (new from Eli Lilly). They are not suitable for low carb eating with MDI, though. But should work well with a pump.

How many high reading do you get?

I only go high if I have eaten something or I am rebounding from a low. I would test basal rates across the full 24 hour cycle to see if there are gaps in basal insulin action that may explain the highs. As you have a pump, adjusting basal rates is easy. Highs ca be caused by inadequate basal...

    High sugar

Or could you be insulin resistant for some reason? Insulin resistance makes it seem like insulin is not working and sickness, stress & hormones make it worse. Reducing carbs and exercise may help deal with it.

Does active preservation of the honeymoon period improve lifetime prognosis?

This is an epidemiological study, so it doesn't jump to conclusions. But the logical connections are clear. The study found that many of the 50+ year complication free medalists still had active beta cells. They produce both c-peptide and insulin. It goes almost without saying that destruction...

    Honeymoon? Novice Questions

Figuring out what the dose and timing should takes a while. When you have got your basal dosages right, you can switch the focus to bolusing the right amount to cover meals. Most T1s use a basal/bolus insulin regimen to get stable control. Basal covers background insulin requiements and bolus...
