    Managing exercise and insulin

Yes, inadequate insulin can impair performance. When I was younger I used ti inject and eat before exercise so I didn't run out of energy. The alternative is to become fat adapted. Takes some getting-used-to but that way we don't need insulin to fuel exercise. I now eat ketogenically and I don't...

Partner has type 1, advice please

How long ago was he diagnosed T1, and was it as an adult? Sounds like endogenous insulin production has increased, which is not unusual soon after the start of insulin treatment. It also happens to T1s diagnosed as adults. If his blood glucose won't go over 6 while on a glucose drip and no...

Suddenly Novorapid does not work - Type 1

Insulin becoming less effective could mean that insulin sensitivity has changed. The best way to optimise insulin sensitivity is to use as little insulin as possible and get daily exercise. The blood glucose swings go away and HBA1c comes right down too.

    Do you have these symptoms?

Sounds like allergies. Have you been to an allergist and had intolerance tests done? That there is family history of hypoglycemia also suggests that there could be a metabolic problem too. Retraining the body to use fat for energy may help. Have you considered a ketogenic way of eating?

    Advice please

Also, testing blood glucose will tell very quickly if diabetes is an issue.

    Mood swings

The mood swings would be consistent with hormonal activity that is also causing blood glucose swings. Have you had your thyroid checked out?

    Sugar and more sugar

As you are still in the honeymoon stage, you can get away with bolusing for carbs in this way. Be aware that it won't last, though. Remaining beta cells will be lost, endogenous insulin production will peter out and tolerance to carbs will drop. So the sooner you recondition yourself to not...

Fatigue in Type 1 Diabetes - Not related to hyperglycemia

Having T1 means that the body can no longer regulate metabolism of glucose. So if glucose is a major source of energy supply/demand mismatches are part of the condition and fatigue can be expected even if blood glucose control is satisfactory. The solution is to eat ketogenically and become fat...

Why seed oils are not good.

Interesting video. My biggest takeaway was just how cheap high energy processed food ingredients are. From a public health perspective, as long as the food industry is financially driven there won't be much change.

    New diagnosis LADA

The important reason for starting insulin as soon as possible is that it helps preserve remaining beta cells. So you make more of your own insulin and and controlling blood glucose is much easier. This is a limited window of opportunity that will close quickly. And it can't be reopened later...

    Ketoacidosis

Lots of ketones and ketoacidosis are caused by lack of insulin. The body starts converting protein and fat to energy and ketones are a by-product of the process. So when insulin is supplied ketones drop. Have you been losing weight? It sounds like you could be LADA. An antibody test will give...

    Passing down t1

Having children is a personal decision and we are all different. My concern is that the decision is made without taking relevant information into account. As I indicated in my initial post, if I knew then what I know now I wouldn't have done it. Passing on a genetic weakness is only part of it...

    Type 1 and Dawn phenomenon

It seems some people don't have an issue with DP, and they are very lucky. DP makes achieving and maintaining satisfactory control much more difficult. Try using different insulins and timing shots so you get the required insulin action when you need it. One solution is to use bedtime injected...

    Passing down t1

There are far too many people in this world for bringing someone with increased health risk into it to make any sense. There are more sensible and compelling ways to find fulfilment in life. Had two daughters and the older one is dong well. The younger one became T1 at 17 and committed suicide...

    Kidneys

Dialysis is the final stage of kidney disease. Blood glucose is the big driver, as the graph shows, of both eye disease (Retinopathy) and kidney disease (Nephropathy). If you keep HBa1c below 7, you should be fine. Mine has been about 7% (53 mmol/mol) for most of the last 42 years and still...

T1 since 1977. I wouldn't have children if I could do it all over again.

    Managing exercise and insulin

The most sensible solution to the blood glucose fluctuation with exercise problem IMO is to take carbohydrates and bolus insulin out of the equation. Eating ketogenically and becoming fat adapted switched the main source of energy from glucose to fat. I do a lot of kayaking and if I go for a 40...

explaining what it's really like to live with Type 1

That is how it is supposed to work. More importantly, the doctor should help the patient feel in control. Only then can patients actually take control and do what needs to be done. The problem is that doctors have very limited understanding of the challenges patients have to deal with. They also...
