What do you make of this...?

Peter Atilla takes metformin and talks a lot about it as an aid for longevity. Recently he talked about testing how it effects his performance and recovery. His initial observation was that it might have a somewhat negative effect there (at least the immediate effect).

    I'm back

Does that mean you were misdiagnosed for 10 years? How high did your blood sugar go before you were properly diagnosed?

T2s: What was your fasting BG this morning, and what did you eat yesterday?

Thanks for looking back to see how long it took to get the blood sugars down to the low 4s. I am just over 3 months eating low carb. I don’t have much weight or waist to lose. I need to build back some muscle that I have lost. My waist is about 30in now as well and I think it looks a bit too...

    Reintroducing Carbs... Humor me!

My A1c was 5.0% but I had a fasting blood glucose of 5.8 on one lab test. (5.1 and 4.7 on two other tests this past year). No diagnosis. I decided to get a meter and check for myself. I found that my fasting are were usually around 5 on waking up but rose sometimes over 5.5 after an hour or so...

    Reintroducing Carbs... Humor me!

I didn’t test at 2 hours today. I generally don’t drop back to pre-meal fasting at 2 hours. That usually takes about 3 hours. I try stay in the 5’s, including maybe a peak just over 6 at breakfast. Lunch almost alway peaks lower than breakfast. Frequently I am back in the 4s before dinner...

T2s: What was your fasting BG this morning, and what did you eat yesterday?

I read your post from December 2017 on you successful journey. It seems you got your fasting level below 5 in only six weeks. In your posts on your meals it appears that you are now consistently in the low 4s and sometimes 3s. How long did it take to get consistently levels in the low 4s? I am...

Meat effect on fasting blood sugar

I didn’t consider it “over-eating”. I just noticed that if I eat 4 oz meat at my evening meal in doesn’t seem to raise fasting blood sugar but eating 9 oz certainly does seem to. I don’t know if it is the extra protein or saturated fat. Nuts for calories in place of the extra meat seem to have a...

How many carbs per day should you be having in a low carb diet

I do like steak but getting good quality grass-fed meat is a bit of a challenge and expensive where I live. Do you eat primarily muscle meat or nose-to-tail?

    Reintroducing Carbs... Humor me!

How do you prepare root veggies (e.g. sweet potatoes) and beans so that you can eat a lot? Naked or with fats? The only way I can seem to eat beans or potatoes is to keep the serving 1/2 cup or less. Hummus is the exception and that has the fat from the tahini.

    Reintroducing Carbs... Humor me!

This morning we had no eggs in the fridge so I ate an almond butter sandwich in addition to my typical breakfast (but today without the eggs) and surprise- same rise as my typical breakfast. Always a rise at breakfast unless I eat no carbs at all. (I once saw no change after two hard boiled...

    Reintroducing Carbs... Humor me!

Each of us and our microbiome are different. I have seen multiple studies which show high variability in response to different foods with the same quantity of carbs for the same person and among glycemic normal people. I can eat high fiber whole grain and seed bread and it usually barely...

How many carbs per day should you be having in a low carb diet

I love avocados. I usually each at least one a day (can get a bit expensive). What other “healthy” fats are easy to add to help gain weight? I eat lots of nuts (walnuts, almonds), olives, EVOO on veggies and salad. Fatty fish (sardines, salmon, herring). I am not a big fan of butter.

    Target fasting blood glucose level

Well, so long as lab tests are consistent, the slightly lower reading would be comparable among lab tests. I wonder how accurate lab tests are. If meters that are +/-15% can be sold, what is the margin for error for labs?

    Fasting blood sugar rising again

I find it hard to severely limit carbs, not overeat protein and then eat enough fat to keep from losing weight. Low carb must be much easier for people who want to lose weight since some of the fat can come from their own body fat.

    Dawn phenomenon

I haven’t tested for ketones. I have been tracking my protein-carbs-fat daily (using Cronometer), activity on a Fitbit and blood sugar (fasting and after dinner each day, as well as additional testing to see response to foods and exercise). My primary goal was to figure out what I can eat to...

    Dawn phenomenon

I have been able to keep my blood sugar in a range between 4.4 and 6.6 by limiting carbs to under 150 grams per day and no more than 60 in a meal (except breakfast where I can’t handle that much). The funny thing is that in the morning even if I eat few carbs (say 15 grams) at breakfast my blood...

How many carbs per day should you be having in a low carb diet

How does keto put on weight? I have found that eating low carb has had me lose weight I didn’t want to lose. To what foods would you attribute the weight gain?

    Fasting blood sugar rising again

I have impaired glucose tolerance. I had a fasting blood test early this year with a 5.9 and then one later at 5.1. I bought a meter to test myself and noticed that after eating a lot of carbs (“healthy carbs like beans, whole grains, sweet potatoes) that my blood sugar would sometimes go too...

Meat effect on fasting blood sugar

I was listening to one of Dave Asprey's podcasts yesterday with Paul Saladino (Kick Veggies to the Curb and Go Full Carnivore) https://blog.daveasprey.com/paul-saladino-621/ . They mentioned that the consumption of too much protein will raise fasting blood sugars (into the 90s in people who...
