    I'm all hooked up..!

Do speak to your DSN also about your basal rates. Its not easy to make logical adjustments while you're worn out by hypos. I'm sure she won't want you having loads of hypos and getting disheartened either. I was really tired for the first few weeks, even with ve yfew hypos. Hang in there!

    Apps for pumpers

Thanks for the replies. I've ordered the Carbs & Cals book and pocket book, but think a smart phone will be the best option as I can have both my logbook and Carbs & Cals on it. Jen - SiDiary looks good. Do you find any glitches or annoying things about it?

    I'm all hooked up..!

I can relate to your worries the first night - the first couple of days I kept checking the 'status' screen to check it was still working or the rate had changed when it should. With regard to practicalities of wearing it, I've tried several ways. I find most of the 'proper' cases/clips too...

    Correct doseage???

Hi Jimian Were your blood sugars very high before you started the Metformin? If your body had got used to being rather high, then coming down to normal levels can feel like you're hypo (even though you aren't), this will settle as you get used to normal levels again. Does this feeling come...

    mental lethargy

The simple (or maybe not so simple) answer is to reduce the fluctations. Its hard to be specific about how to do this without knowing what you're doing already, but a course such as DAFNE should help help you control your levels better and feel much more in control of your diabetes instead of...

One week in and so tired...

I'm not surprised you're tired. I started on my pump 7 weeks ago and got extremely tired, even when I was sleeping through the night. My readings weren't far off target so it wasn't that. Just learning to use the pump, the extra testing, fasting, what to do, how to wear it and the focus being...

MORE DIABETIC NURSES IN THE NHS PLEASE!!!

The chances are better now thanks to courses like DAFNE, increased use of pumps and generally more of a 'can do' attitude. When I was a teenager in the 70s/80s, the rule was if it involved shift work you couldn't do it. No discussion, no asking what career you wanted and finding a way, just...

    Apps for pumpers

Hi All DSN showed me the Carbs & Cals app, but are they all like that, ie carb-counting databases? Are some of them more like digital monitoring/record books? My phone is 6yrs old, very basic and although supposedly web-enabled, it doesn't seem keen. So I'm thinking about getting a smart...

    Should I or not

Hi Hazey My consultant suggested a pump about 5 years ago and I wasn't keen. Meantime I did DAFNE and decided if I ran into trouble despite DAFNE, a pump would be worth a trial. Ran into problems. Decided to go for a pump in November. Frustrating 6 month wait..... I've been on my pump for a...

    Pre-Pump Assessment Clinic Appointment...

I've just started on a Medtronic Veo and absolutely love it. I had a choice of that or the Animas and chose the Veo mainly for its CGMS capability. (Since then, Animas have brought out their model with CGMS.) Most pumps seem to have similar features, but maybe different names for them or they...

Correction doses and one for the girls!

A lot of women find that periods affect their BG, in either direction. Or maybe a rise for a few days before, then drops again once bleeding starts. You'll need to test frequently and find your own pattern. That is, don't believe doctors who tell you what will happen as though its fixed by...

How can I try to remember I'm attached to a £3000+ machine?!

Re: How can I try to remember I'm attached to a £3000+ machi It probably depends a bit on "how you're built" and the type of bra. I'm rather... pettite. I have one bra (padded) which would probably look OK, otherwise the pump doesn't feel secure and the top edge makes an obvious lump in my...

    Before or after?

Don't think the Veo has this problem either. Definitely changing sets before meals now. I'm on 0.35 u/hr mostly, 0.4 for a few hours, so the meal bolus after changing will be an advantage. Ideally I want to change sets around 6pm, which is when I get home on work days but should always be...

    Before or after?

Didn't check on here before breakfast this morning, so I changed the set after breakfast as iHs suggested LOL. I could see the advantages of both methods. Anyhow the change went well, didn't take too long and all the adhesive's perfectly flat, for the first time. 2 hrs after the set change BS...

    Before or after?

Will discuss basal changes with DSN tomorrow. She wanted me to just observe till then, to be sure Levemir was gone before adjusting rates/ratios. I've read the manual and in Pumping Insulin about time blocks, I know your advice is right. But to an extent have to see what DSN says first, to...

    Before or after?

Thanks iHs, but that's partly the problem. I wouldn't know if a rise is "unexpected" and due to a set problem, or because Levemir's all gone and basal rate possibly too low. Sorry wasn't suggesting I should add in the basal missed while disconnected. More that the disconnection would cause...

    Replacing infusion sets

Oh OK. When I saw "gusher" and "squirting blood" I imagined having to scrub the walls... or the floor as I'm squeamish and would have to lie down  Tissue or plasters I can cope with, I wondered if I'd be putting a pack of frozen peas on it or something.

Where to dispose of lancets, pls?

Strips aren't a biohazard, especially when you think what women of childbearing age put in the bin every month. Its less about different strips and more about local rubbish rules... or where you are when someone sees you put a used strip in the bin. In the hospital where I used to work a nurse...

Where to dispose of lancets, pls?

http://www.medicalshop.co.uk/s/6.99/0.3 ... Sharps-Bin They do larger sizes too. No measurements on the site, but you could email and ask them. I've never used this supplier but my DSN gave me their brochure, so I presume they're reliable. Or try a web search. Some as small as 0.2 litre show...

    sore throat remedy help?

No-added-sugar Ribena blackcurrant drink, made a bit stronger than normal and with warm (not boiling) water is also very soothing on a sore throat. Hope you feel better soon.
